Not sure if this is of interest to anyone, but my Bj74 is a jap import and had a back seat my 10 year old could barely fit in. so i removed the factory seat and roll bar from a local aussie BJ73 and fitted it. loads of room for two large adults in the back now and inertia reel seat belts which bolt to roll bar. cheers

Hi Jim ,Why couldnt your 10 yo fit in before? I always thought the belted rear seat was the same size as an unbelted type.

I looked at a 73 series recently that left the road on a bend at about 70-80kph,rolled and was written off.
The rollbar was bent but held together better than the roof over the driver's position.

Hi Rosco, No the back seats are totally different, our local aussie ones have double lock down points and different brackets so the seat is angled back and rearward about an extra six inches. The Jap one has the seat at 90 * and about 8 inches of leg room. I'm 6ft 2 and sitting in the back was almost impossible. they are also not fitted with the factory roll bar of our local ones which i fitted in mine so i could have the inertia reel belts, had to weld in nuts on the pillars and get the plates cut from a local one to weld onto the wheel arches so the roll cage could bolt in. The jap seat does have headrests though which our ones don't thats why i just used the brackets. Yes my boys are big lads as well. cheers jim

I assumed the seats were in the same position but you learn everyday.
My aussie spec seat have(had)headrests from new, maybe because its an 88.
The headrest block the vision in the rear view mirror so Ive never bothered using them.

the Japan spec BJ74 back seat SUCKS same with the rag top 70 series, NO leg room...
what i did on mine was get rid of the bench and install the side facing 40 series seats.
the CDM 70 had decent leg room so you could also install on of those into the 74 (probably with a bit of tweaking and mount mods)

cheers

crushers does the Bj,Fj 74s in canada come fitted with the factory roll bar like our aussie ones?

I moved mine back 2" and replaced the base of the JDM type with a CDN spec.

No, the Canadian trucks did not get FRP tops and therefore no roll bars that would work.

I 100% agree, the JDM rear seat of a 74 series bites in stock configuration.

Hi Jim,
Could you post some pics of the back of your cruiser. I have an 88 BJ74 and am running into the same issue. I was thinking about raising and moving the seat back to provide more leg room.

Hi Wayne, Can you post a photo of the 40 Series side facing seat you installed?
Thanks......1978HJ45

Thanks......That really opens up that rear space which as we all know is somewhat limited.

** What is with the cage? Do you haul prisoners on your off days or is your dog overly aggressive?

that cage is for deranged LJ78 owners that have gone over the edge ...

I would have thought that would require a long wheel base for extra capacity
(ie Troopy).:)

nah, we have reduced the numbers drasticly over the last 2-3 years. :bounce:
sadly, most will never come back out of the nuthouse ... :hillbilly:

Ya I miss mine too. I wasnt as fxxxed up as the others. No Really !

I am currently in the process of shifting my rear seat back and lifting it. I have a JDM 70 SWB, and have suffered no leg room in the back long enough. Have shifted it back 120mm, and raised it 100mm. Will take some pics of the brackets over the weekend. The seat locking pin bracket was a pig, as fixing points through the tray were complicated by the fuel tank cross member support. Gonna use the space under the seat to store my recovery gear.

I must admit that I did not enjoy concentrating on the water temp. gauge every time I drove it however it had great road manners, had plenty of room and the auto transmission was a blessing for a lazy man.
It is still going strong with the current owner so time will tell.

Perhaps you should get a HZJ77. same space inside but without the coils and POS engine. Overall an awesome ride
