Doh, never mind. I did stop by the shop and Edwin fired it up. I can't believe how much smoother that 4BT with the inline pump is.

Dave sorry I couldn't make it there today, I just got back from physical therapy. We'll try to do lunch next week if you want, I'll plan better.
As far as the inline pump goes, it's why I waited and insisted on getting it. Smoother and more powerful, you can barely feel any vibration in the cab. It's almost road worthy and I can't wait to drive it everywhere.

I didn't realize that the p-pump was smoother! Now my interest is piqued :D

It's smoother and more powerful from what I read.

In stock form :)

Was debating on whether or not to turn it up all the way to 11 when it's ready. I guess I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.
Is yours turned up? How much difference in power is it? MPGs?

Mine is turned up some and there is a significant difference in power when you do turn it up. I try to tune it for good MPGs, but the added power is addicting. I'm presently getting 15-16 in town and 18-20 on the road, but my foot is pretty hard on the skinny pedal.

Time for a small update..

Got the inter-cooler pipes hooked up, just waiting on a U silicone fitting to connect it to the turbo charger. Installed the fan and radiator hoses. As soon as oil gets added to the t case it will be drivable.

I also Want to thank DaveGonz for dropping off the pulley this morning. Mine was a bit bent and was making noises. And now the pics.

Side view of inter-cooler pipes and fan. The shroud is not yet installed.

Top view of the engine. You can see that the pipes are not yet connected to the turbo.

The fan blades do not touch the radiator hose no matter how much you revv it.

"The fan blades do not touch the radiator hose no matter how much you revv it."

The importance of this cannot be overstated.

Awesome build - the motor looks like it belongs in a tug boat - pure industry. Beautiful. That truck is going to be a danger to yourself and others - bravo!

It also looks like that fan is hard mounted meaning it has no clutch. My thoughts are that you might have overcooling issues. My electric fans rarely come on in the winter and are not constantly running in the summer either. With this being a compression engine getting up to operating temps is definitely important/more efficient. In my stepvan my engine had a mechanical fan that did have a clutch on it so I know that was a combination used.

Dave, there's a shop near Edwin's that sells performance parts. The fan cost me a total of $ 22 with tax. It would be good to find a 60/62 fan clutch and make it work, but I'd rather get a fan specifically for the Cummins. This fan is temporary if it works too well.

Boots, it is hard mounted and I'm really strapped for time. I ordered two fans but the clutches were screw ons and not bolt ons like this engine requires. I want to get this rig on the road by next week so I'm now pressed for time. I know these engine prefer to run hot for better efficiency. There's a ghetto and temporary solution to this that served me well in Iraq's freezing desert that I might have to use here.
Cut out a piece of cardboard and place it in front of most of the radiator. Keep the lower part uncovered as air needs to flow through the intercooler then through the radiator. This will raise the engine running temperature without affecting the cooling of the air being sucked into the combustion/compression chamber.
If it's still an issue in the hot Texas summer then I will definitely need to swap out fans and get one with a clutch. Right now my goal is to get it running and inspected by next week. Thanks for looking and keep hitting me with advise/observations.

Well if you don't plan to run a shroud, or a really crappy shroud that doesn't seal against the fan, you might be OK.

I'm a HUGE fan of the contour fans in 60 series trucks. They fit the radiator damn near perfectly and can be made to mount with some stupid simple brackets from home depot. I haven't even wired up my fan controller yet ( fans always disabled ) and I've never seen my temp gauge get above 1/3 on the factory gauge. Granted, it's not hot out just yet, but the motor just runs cool. My 2F would have melted down a while ago if I did the same thing.

As a temporary solution, your single static fan will work just fine.

Johnny
The 62 shroud fits nearly perfectly. We are planning on putting it in. But like I said, plans will change as the results come in. I think my mindset is still stuck in Iraq mode where the desert can boil an egg by 10 AM and that's what I'm basing my assumptions on. I need to drive it around town for a bit and adjust from there. Debugging this will take a while.

I think the cooling is fine and the inspection is more important, if you get the license and Insurance done you can drive it and the fun begins.
For my hj I use the radiator curtain (rolls from top to bottom)
If it is drivable then you can forget about wrenching for a few weeks and do some other things
(after a lot of welding or maintenance I usually do nothing, I mean not even the small stuf that I normally do...:D)

Drove Big Red today without the hood or front bumper. It felt good to have him move under his own power, but I was disappointed that there was no boost. The turbo was spooling and you can hear it. However it just wasn't pushing any air. A diesel mechanic is going to look at it tomorrow and it just may be that I need a new turbo. I did however like the new transmission and the torque. The clutch was strong and stiff and the brakes worked great. filmed the drive on my camera phone but the file is too large to load.
In other news got the pyrometer, boost and oil pressure gauges up. We tried wiring the tach to the digital box but we couldn't get it to run. Called Dave Gonz who directed us to his thread, but still no bueno. It would have also helped if I had counted the number of teeth on the flywheel before installing it. I tried calling valair, but the technician wasn't in. Maybe I'll have better luck Monday.

Here are some pictures.

Mike, do you have your boost gauge hooked up? Are you not seeing any boost under load? On mine, I won't get any boost if I'm just parked there revving up the engine. I'd also look for leaks in your intercooler piping. Maybe you can bypass the intercooler and just plumb a line straight to the intake.
