What turbo is that in your truck? I think it's the HX30, but I'm not 100% sure. I do remember it sounding good when Edwin fired it up for me last week.

Yeah, there are a lot of connections in your intake piping which only multiplies the places for a boost leak. I know when I had my boost signal line come undone while I was driving boost tanked and it felt like a dog and boost signal line isn't that big. When you spin the turbine by hand if it's smooth and isn't contacting anything, play is minimal on the wheel, the turbo should be fine. There's always the soapy water spray to try and find leaks.

The air pressure coming out of the pipes right before the intake manifold feels like the equivalent of a hair drier. It's just not making sense to me why the boost gauge doesn't move, although it does show the slightest sign of vacuum when I let off the gas. It may all be in my head, I'm not used to driving a 4 cylinder diesel and my reference may be skewed cause I came from driving 8 cylinder turbo diesels that are specifically made for land cruisers. I would have to compare it to Dave's truck for a better reference. I just drove it down the street and back. It feels like a dog off the line, not that I ever expect to race this rig. First gear is super low, so I expected the boost gauge to shoot up when I redlined it, but only the pyrometer shot up. We'll see what happens on Monday. Thanks for all your help and advice guys.

Here is the video of us driving it down the street. Edwin drove so I can film it. There is no exhaust pipe installed yet, so it was louder than it would be, but not unbearable. When I drove it I liked the feel and handling and all that torque. I am just annoyed with the boost issue right now, but by no way regretting the swap. Anyway here's the video link.

I'm wondering if the wastegate might be stuck open or not fully sealing? I'll swing by today during lunch to check it out.

I had the same thoughts yesterday.

From the video I can tell by the sound that the turbo is not boosting. DaveG can you spin the turbo by hand to see what you feel to at least eliminate it being the culprit? Along with the wastegate checking (including the signal line) what about something like a cut in the boost gauge line or fitting not sealing. It has to be something simple. Those EGTs will come down dramatically once you've got this thing boosting and you will have a big stupid grin on your face when you step on the accelerator. :D

The turbo spins by hand very easily. I'm hoping it's something simple so i can wear that stupid grin on my face all day long. I'm tired of buying parts for this rig, just want to drive it now.

I'm not at the shop so I couldn't tell you off hand. I don't remember seeing a waste gate at all, but that could be because I wasn't looking for it.

Well, it looks like it's the turbo. There is about a quarter inch of end play on the shaft. I'd buy a cheap CHRA assembly on eBay and swap it in if the housings don't look bad when you take it apart. I bet it was flopping around in there and not spooling up.

Dave thanks for taking the time to go check it out. I'll wait until Edwin gives me the correct parts and I'll get them ordered. These last few things are dragging it out.

Well this is where it sits right now. Following Dave's advice, I ordered a new turbo cartridge to replace the bent one, it should arrive later this week. Hopefully this fixes the boost issue and I can get it driving out of the shop soon. I also decided to add a mechanical water temp gauge to compliment the other three I have. The stock gauge still works, but I don't trust it to work correctly.

Here are a few pics.

Boost reference on that HX30w goes all the way to the manifold via a hard line? That's pretty slick.

1/4" of end play is insane. Check the compressor housing for wheel contact before reassembly.

Where are you getting the center section from?

I ordered the center part off of ebay from a a link Dave sent me. It should be here early next week. Hoping this solves the last of the major problems then I can focus on how to get the AC to work. Need to change the pulley to accept a serpentine belt.

I was almost tempted to buy a full Chinese made HX30W for a little bit more. These last few things are beginning to add up. Meant to ask, Edwin said you guys tested the waste gate, how did you do that?

I didn't test it, but have done it on the turbo I just got. I just applied some compressed air into the wastegate actuator port and saw the rod move in/out.
