I would re-bore the cylinder to make sure the scoring is cleaned up and go to an over sized piston. Flat top 305 small block Chev are a good size but no need to use JE's like me, though I would look at the possibilities of going with the Jag 4,2 con slightly more rod length and therefor better torque. Small amount to grinding to the crank needed for the Jag Rods but nothing huge. Their are a few little issues using these rods though but these are listed in my build https://forum.ih8mud.com/showthread.php?t=134529&page=6

1st 1 on the list

Or maybe even an oversized 3F piston? Both the 3F and Chev Pistons are shorter in the skirt, this is a good thing.

So I guess I'll be buying new pistons and boring it out. Might as well. SO what size pistons should I go with and where is a good reasonable source?

The amount of over boring you need is determined by the out of roundness of the worst cylinder. The machine shop will dtermine that and then order pistons, but not bore it until the pistons are in-hand. Price on that kit seems good.
I was at $600+ with just new cam, lifters and pistons. I would also have the machine shop install the new cam bearings...you don't want to do that.

Hey Trollhole, you can take this for whatever its worth, but Deves makes a excellent piston ring... I really like the design of the oil-control ring.... I got a set going in now and I'll post a couple of pics if your interested....... linky---> http://www.deves.com/index.cfm

X2 on the Deves rings. Pretty sure that these are what MAF SOR and ccott sell.

By the way when you did your compression check did you open the throttle all the way.

When I did mine I failed to do so and got the following numbers.

135
120
120
118
140
125

when I re ran with open throttle I got 145 accorss the board.

Oh, I pitched a bitch! They did send a piston home with me to prove they were scrap, but I think he wanted the block with good bores and punched out a block that was worn out...

Sorry for your loss there Man :frown:... so with flat-tops and a open head, what is the compression? 110/115 ? or did they do some trimming on the head to help compensate?

shorter in the skirt, this is a good thing.

Maybe not.. your thinking is reduced contact friction, mostly found in short-lived race type applications.... the skirt area needed is determined by the bore and mostly the stroke..... to make this short, more skirt area= a piston that is stable in the thrust/counter-thrust direction, improved cooling by more oil contact surface and just a improved piston attitude.... I would go back with what has been designed and proven....

Deves rings it is. But I have yet to figure out what piston to use. I want something stock and not super modified. A little won't hurt. Should I just get what the machine shop at NAPA recommends or should I just go back to OEM?

Couple of updates.

Boring the block .040 over, Having the block decked. Going with whatever pistons the machine shop reccomends. Deves rings. Balanced.

Buying the TBI wire harness from www.affordable-fuel-injection.com today including the chip, MAF sensor, temp, fuel pump, and o2.

Adapter for TBI, pedal, cable, coil and ignition module from Downey.

Lifters from CCOT

Get my MAF billet RV cam tomorrow.

I'm also debating on whether I should go ahead a bolt on the Taurus fan I bought and do away with the manual fan. Any comments?

Mechanical fans seem to do great on F series engines. I would stick with was works. That is, unless you want a pinch more power.

I don't know, I ended up with an open chanber head shaved. It was 5 years ago. I do remember asking for the max shave but don't remember the numbers. I have learned a ton since then and would do things different now, along the lines trollhole is going, minus the color;). I do wish I looked for a closed chamber head to go with the flat top pistons.

How much are they charginf for the harness and stuff? I cut apart a stock TBI harness and it wasn't too bad.

A little over 500 for the harness and adapters.

My first 40 project

Much to my wife's dismay I bought an 81 FJ40 on ebay and am now in process of restoring. Lot's of ideas racing through my head...and Title problems to boot. Should I start putting money in the rig before I get title cleared? I'm afraid I will put all this money in it and then hit a bottleneck on the title. What would you do?

Taurus fan on a 2F

I don't thing a taurus fan will between a 2F and the stock radiator. Others I know tried fitting one in that space and the taurus fan is too thick. IIRC, about ~4". I would recommend a stock 2f clutch fan.

Don't forget the fan shroud...minimum 20% improvement :D

Dude, start your own thread...........

Hi All:

With all the V-8 conversion guys that I've seen have problems with overheating from using electric fans I'd say stick with the OE Toyota plastic clutch fan.

Alan

the V8 thing is a whole different issue within it self.

I think that statement is false, but as I said before, I'd stick with the mechanical fan on a 2F.
