So I'm not sure how old this news is, I've seen a couple comments saying the same this year, just wanted to put it out there in its own thread:

I was in Discount Tire and they said they can't mount 10.5 wide BFG tires on stock Land Cruiser steel 6" wide rims anymore. They said it was being flagged on the system 6.5" was minimum and our stock rims are 6" and set that way by the manufacturer. Would not do it no matter what I said. I went to the BFGoodrich website and it says rim min width is 7" for 10.5 wide tires and even for 30x9.5r15 tires the min width it says is 6.5", so even worse than what Discount Tires was saying.

I've run 33x10.5R15 BFG KO2's for like 9 years on my stock 15x6 steelies without a problem, and I've seen them all over these forums, so I feel like its a bunch of BS. Does anyone know the inside story or opinions on if you'll just order them and have a small independent shop mount them anyway?

Are there any good 33" on 15"rim alternatives out there? Can we somehow bring up a petition that if they're gonna take the 10.5s away from us, bring back the legendary 9.5 wides that they stopped making??

It's a liability issue for discount tire, and since they're a big corporation they have to play by the rules. I'd just find a mom n pop tire place that is willing to mount them. I've found that discount tire's service quality is not great (had tires they mounted have balance issues within 3k miles), you may save $ on the tire, but having to go back and have them rebalance them costs too much time.

Most people find a smaller independently owned tire shop not a chain one. If they seem like they are not sure about doing it offer to pay in cash and tell them you don’t need a receipt. Try to take fear of liability away if they seem concerned, everyone has to protect themselves. Or find a local off-road shop and tel them it’s a farm truck or offroad only. Maybe even post in your local area for land cruisers. Enough of these are out there I bet someone within 100 miles of you has had those mounted. Or try taking without the vehicle and just wheels tires and put on yourself.

I went to a local independent shop. They didn’t care or bring up wheel size.

Yes, go to a normal shop that isn't corporate. I've never been turned away for abnormal tire fitment and the choices I've made are outrageous. East to West Coast and it's the same every time.

The Discount Tires around me have been like this for years and have long had an issue with the 10.50 on 6 inch rims. I quit going to DT years ago because they have so many rules about fitment I gave up. Spacers? Forget about it. Last set I bought I bought online and had them shipped to Firestone who mounted them no problem.

It's been true for over 15 years
I had discount tires mount a set of BFG KO2 in 2011, some BFG mud terrains in 2015(?), and rotated a couple times since then and this is the first I'm hearing about it. Just thought it was worth the discussion and people see this and its general practice to just mount them anyway...

The solution is to use a narrower size tire, find a different business as suggested, most independent shops will not question, or go to 16" wheel with more size options including narrower and taller sizes such as the OEM 70 series steel wheel.

I had my buddy try and mount some 32 11.5 falken at3 tires on stock rims it tore the bead trying to mount them with the tire machine. He was pissed and bought a new tire to replace it witch was cool but i still paid him for the tire and had my customer get wider rims.

My solution was buying my own tire machine, tired of paying and the inconvenience. Found a $4000 machine for $700! It paid for itself real quick.

Discount would even do my 255/85-16 on a 16x6, which is .5” off of the spec. No issues. I still went with 4wheelparts but it was nice to know if I was close to a discount they could fix me up.

The tall and skinny tire is the future. It drives so dang good.

I've personally mounted and dismounted 31"x 10.5" BFG AT tires several times when in Baja MX on the stock 15x6" wheel using a hi-lift bead breaker attachment, three big tire irons and igniting starting fluid to set the bead.
The stock wheel is the most difficult wheel to break the bead compared to my 8" rims.

I've witnessed on a few occasions, tire technicians struggling over and over to seat the bead on my stock rims. My 8" rims fit the tire properly, the stock rim diameter I believe is a tad too big - makes seating the bead a bitch.

When you look at a 31/10.5R15 AT tire mounted on the stock 6 inch wheel, it doesn't look right . The sidewalls get pulled in too far.
That tire fits best on a 7 inch wheel. A 8 inch wheel is a tad too wide

Yes. Discount Tire sucks. Interesting about this though. I had some 33x12.5/15s mounted a while back by an independent. They were actually too wide so I went to 10.5s later.

I wish they sold the 33x9.5r15 A/Ts still, that would be amazing which is like 245/90R15 but thats not a real produced size I loved the handling and look of the tall skinnys. I got a set of 16" alloy 70 rims I put snow tires on because its even harder finding large snow tires for 15" rims, but wish I could stay with the stock rims for the other seasons though... maybe not.

I run 33x12.5/15 as well... Ken Towery (regional chain) put them on for me... they might be too wide though. It wanders a lot! I don't rub though unless I turn it to the lock.
