My fj40 is going to be driven on streets mainly and I'm debating if I should get the AT or MT. For those of you that has experienced both, is there a big ride quality difference? How about the wear factor, do they wear about the same? Remember, mainly street driving on 5.5 steelies with 33x9.5 or 10.5.
I prefer the look of MT but if it wears significantly faster, then it would be a factor I must consider.
Thanks guys

I wanted the 9.5 x 33 mud's but BFG doesn't make them anymore. Got the AT's and am quite happy. Very good on-road tire and ok for the light offroad that I enjoy.

i don't know about a/t's, but m/t's are a nightmare with even a bit of snow on the road.

Yeah, if snow is anywhere in the equation, stay away from the MT's....the AT's are what I use on my plow rig (they're awesome in the snow)....

I'd argue that the MTs are superior when aired down and at low speeds. At normal road speeds 35-55, the ATs win hands down if there's packed snow or ice.

The ATs bring the suck in gumbo or slush though.

I gathered that guys mount 10.5 on the 5.5 steelies, would the center of the tread be too rounded and wear faster being the the tire is so pinched?

i have 35/12.5 AT's on my DD, their pretty good on road. i have good tread with 20k on them so far. im hoping atleast 40k out of them. but for my next set im going with KM2's.

i just bought 35/12.5/15's for my fj40, but it will be a while before i can use them

I never had that problem....if you have the lift, I really like the look of the 33x9.5's on the 40. I'm sure you could find some pics if you do a seach....

I'll save you some effort.

Obviously the BFG A/Ts. 33x9.50, on the stock steel wheels. With OME 2.5" suspension.

On my faux-lux, I have the BFG A/Ts (31x10.50). I got 100K+ out of the first set, and am well into 20K+ on the second. For a predominantly highway vehicle, it's the only tire I'll consider. BTW--on snow runs, my aired down 31x10.50s and me have gone everywhere that other trucks were having problems with (locked 80s, MT 40, etc...)

I'll probably go the same route on my 45 when i finally decide to buy wheels and tires for it as well.

i run 31 9.5 a/t's on my pick-up , they work great in the snow and on the road . sure they pack up with mud but i don't go offroad that often with it . i usually get 100 000 highway km's out of them , put them on every truck i buy usually

35 12.50 m/t km1 on my 40 , i don't really hear them driving down the road they definitely don't bother me for noise . horrible if you hit any ice , i have been totally stuck locked up on flat ground just a sheet of ice . it moved in 4wd but they really don't perform that well in the winter .

you will be happy with the a/t's i think , i always have been . i am also very happy with my m/t's but the 40 sees more dirt then pavement if i can help it .

Just so I can be sure what you guys are saying, 33x10.5x15 AT will not be too wide for the 5.5 steelies and the width of the rim or the lack of it will not cause the center of the tread to wear prematurely.
Did I get it right?
Thanks

isn't that the truth

if I used my rig mostly on the road, I would go A/T, but it sees 90% wheeling, so I prefer the M/Ts

Correct. I'm sure I've seen some 33x10.50s on the stock steel wheels, but I can't find any pics at the moment to prove it.

But I also think you can fit 33x9.50 without any lift. I think the 10.50 requires a slight lift. Don't hold me to that though.

Added benefit to the 9.50: less rotating mass, so you get the benefits of the 33" tire, but with a wheel/tire that only seems as heavy as a 31x10.50 by my entirely unscientific measurement.

singletrackjunkie - I've never siped the mt's, but I think it's more of a question of tread pattern. I think the wide pattern of the mt's won't allow for the same traction as the at's since traction is gained by the snow being compressed into the smaller channels and "adhering" to the road. There's too much distance between the lugs on the mt's to achieve that compression..... IMHO....

Here's the 31x10.5 AT's on my my last plow rig ('80). They're mounted on steel wagon wheels, though, not the stock steelies. I've had them mounted on the stockers and they were fine....

personally neither, i would go with toyo m-55's, they are slightly more aggressive than a AT but not as aggressive as a MT. the m-55's are very hard wearing and also have a commercial rating, but sadly a little spendy.

.00002 cents :D

I got these 31x10.5 last week.
I've had 2 other sets of ATs on other vehicles and never once got stuck or denied.

MT won't get as much mpg on the pavement.
