Looking at the specs of the BFG AT T/A KO wheels, the BFG website recommends a rim width of 7"-9".

I thought I'd seen these on stock wheels, but aren't stock steel wheels like 6.5" wide?

Can a good tire shop just squeeze these on or do I need to go aftermarket? I'm going to be bummed if I can't go OEM

Thanks as always,
James

OEM 40 wheels are actually 5.5". Lots of folks run the BGF 33x10.5's on the stock wheels with no issues. You should be fine.

Stock FJ60 rims are 6.5" wide while stock FJ40 "splits" are 5.5... What you probably saw was the rare 33x9.5 however there are some guys that have sent their stock steelie FJ40 splits out and had them widened by places like Stockton Wheel.

Thanks Guys! I should have specified a FJ40 stock wheel. I thought lots of folks were running these on stock wheels, but got concerned when I looked up the recommended specs on BFG's website. Looks like I'm going to be ordering some new OEM wheels! Whoo-hoo!

ATs, in particular, are designed with that flat tread. The narrow rims cause the tread to be rounded. Seems wrong to me, even hazardous. (?)

For 33x10.5s I'd want at least a 7" wheel. What OEM wheels are you thinking of?

33x10.5 MTs have a narrower tread, and I think they'd be ok on OEM 6" wagon wheels.

I think the problem may be overstated, I ran 33x12.5's on 15x7 rims for a couple years (mud terrain however). I ran 31x10.5 on the same rims before that.

I would expect that you would be fine running a 33x10.5 on stock wheels, the extra sidewall height will help with the width difference.

The 15x5.5 you can still get new from Toyota. Ozur gave me a part number of 42601-60072.

Also, I'm already committed to the ATs. They should arrive Mon/Tues next week. I was going to run them on my existing wheels which are aftermarket w/ TR Beadlocks, but decided I won't ever really need to have beadlock wheels (no plans to rock crawl) and should sell them to pay for other toys.

Ozur mentioned the 70 series steel wheels are 15 x 7, but I don't know what they look like, so I gotta go look that up.

Beadlock shot just for fun:

The 70 series ones I know about are 16x6, part number 42601-60262-03 and look like this:

There are 'better' tire size options with 16" rims. 285/75-16s are true 33s.

One thing to remember when buying tires is that the load range will determine how soft the side walls are. I noticed that the BFG ATs in this size are load range E, but you can get other tires in this size in load range C which would be more approprate for a 40.

steelies are 5.5x15, wagon steelies are 6.0x15. not sure what the split rims are size wise, i thought 16x5.5 or something.

From Beno "7x series steelies are 15x7". These are what I want to see a pic of now. He didn't give me a part number.

Hmmmmm...

I said that?

40 rims are 15x5.5

7x are 16x6 or 15x6

:) you did, but guess it was a typo. No problem as I was peppering up with questions. Got to think now on which way I want to go. I'm leaning towards a wider rim though - 7" to stay within BFG recommendations.

Thanks everyone for the inputs.

Yes, you are right. My bad.

Long day and my circuits crossed!!

I have BFG 33x10.5 ATs on my BJ70 with stock rims for the past two years and they are doing fine. Even tread wear and they handle the same as the BFG 33x9.5 ATs that I used to run on this truck.

Regarding the rims; for years I have had access to tire mounting and balancing equipment, so I have mounted my tires on my Cruisers. I have mounted a number of 15 inch wheels off 40s, 60s and 70s. They have consistently measured 6.5 inches wide with the calipers for the balancer (which measures the width from outside to outside). For my case this is only academic, since the 10.5 inch wide tires mount well on these rims and drive/wear well which are the keys to me.

Good luck with the new tires.
