Of the 4 motors in my '68 (F, 283, 305 and 327) and comparing against the 350 in my '64, my opinion is thus:

The 305 w/ RV cam is giving me the best all around performance. Not as much power as the 350, but not as much heat, much better gas mileage, the RV cam give plenty of grunt (not true F grunt however, but better than most v8's). The engine is cheap and easy to find parts for. I wouldn't keep an F motor (or 2F) as I have to drive several hundred highway miles and in the original motor, well, I just don't have that kind of time -- but mostly there are no parts in hinter-Nevada-lands.

I don't do fuel injection or auto's because I need reliability and push start-ability as I'm often out back alone.

For the tranny, I've tried the SM420, SM465, J3, H41 and H42. I believe the NV4500 to be the better choice for the OD. For the price, the SM465. For the ease of install, your H42.

You could put in an american V8 so your Toyota buddys can watch you wrench on your rig on the side of the trail just like a Jeep. Or you can keep your F motor and just drive it. JMO

IMHO - TBI 350. Look for the LT-1 out of the roadmaster. Cheap, powerful.

None of the LT-1s were TBI, all multi-port FI. Still sweet though. Carry a spare water pump.

I'll throw out my $0.02: Turbo-charged 4.3 like a Syclone or Typhoon + nv4500 and an Orion. Just as much power for 3/4 the weight; good enough torque.

I'm not sure if this engine is in your price range, but I believe it has the fuel injection and computer built in.

How much can you afford?

The FJ40 with stock engine and trans is a good setup and if you have a running stock engine I sugest you leave it that way.

If you want to crawl around and climb the occasional hill the the stock six and drive train are fine.
I you like to cross the line and be at the top of the hill first then a V8 might be what you want.

My six blew up at 180K and time and money was a factor.

I went with a 350 because that was the most popular and the less expensive way to go at the time.

The six always had the right amount of power and torque to get the job done all be it not in record time.

The V8 has more power than I really need and if not careful can dig holes faster.

Parts for the six are harder to find and cost more.

Parts for the 350 are plentiful and less expensive for normal repair.

I drove my 70 FJ40 for over 11 years with the stock six and missed it when I swapped for the eight.

Now at almost 34 years with the V8 I don't think I would be happy with the six.

Not the easiest but definitely the best.
The single turbo has been done, just need someone with deep pockets to go for the twin turbo version.
Any takers? I can supply the engine

I think the 6clydr was around 3.7l & the 12 cyldr was around 5.3l. The 12cyldr's pistons were about the size of a beer can. I had a friend who was the top jag mechanic in the city. At some point during a Jags engine life he would recommend a chev sbc and auto trans to make it more reliable and perform better. Jag engines at a certain point weren't cost effective to rebuild, while the XJ6 or XJS cars where still in extremely good condition.
