This is kind of a necro-post, but if I were in France, like the OP, I'd look at some of the many diesel industrial/truck engine/transmission set ups that are easily and cheaply available in Europe. Lots of short wheel base diesel small transport trucks/wagons there made by GM (Opel), Ford or Mercedes. Even diesel FJ40s are plentiful and available.
