hello
what is the best engine / tranny swap for a 1974 - fj40 ?

offroad/onroad use

best regards

Quite the loaded question. Save yourself some time from reading the 1000 opinions you'll get from this and think about what YOU want. I was trying for a 3fe to replace the tired 2f in my 69, but eventually bought an old chevy pickup to replace the drivetrain. It was much cheaper in the end and parts are plentiful.

To throw another idea in your head, if I had the cash, I'd do a cummins.

one that runs

How much money do you have?

IF your going to replace the great inline 6, go cummins 4BT, Lots of ppl take out an industrial quality power plant for a crappy consumer quality V8. If you must go with a V8 swap, go 6.0 GM, they are lasting longer than any of the previous GM V8's and have unlimited power potential.

Automatic: 350 and a 700R4.

Manual: 350 and an NV4500/NP205.

Manual with stock drive train: 350 and a Mark's of Australia conversion kit (sold by Advance Adapters).

I'm not a fan of the SBC, but they work and you do not have to reinvent the wheel. Personally I think the 360 Dodge is a better engine, longer lasting, but you're in uncharted waters there. I like the 351W Ford for car applications, but am not fond of it for truck use. The best 350 is probably a more modern one with fuel injection. If you go carb, use a QuadraJet if you want a 4-bbl. A Holley or Edlebrock will not give you lugging power like the old six got. If you go 2-bbl, get an Autolite 2100. Dirt simple, reliable, and works offroad.

If I had a blank slate, I'd probably put a diesel in. Don't know which one, but it would be diesel. 4BT, or maybe a Mercedes.

350V8

I had a 350 with a turbo 400 trans and thought it produced too much power - always seemed to be breaking.

Now running a 283 with an SM420 and like the combination much better. Better off road and good on the streets. Highway driving is okay, but I wouldn't suggest it for long frequent highway driving.

So the combination of the two may be the real question; which I think is what you asked.

I'm going 5.3 in my 79 - 40 and staying with the 4 speed for budgetary reasons at this time. Tons available because they just aren't breaking, looking at $500 for engine plus wire harness and adapters. All in, less than the parts to rebuild the 2F in my 76 - 40.
My goal is daily driver (over 10mpg) and since this 40 is 4-link rear and sprung over with rebuilt body, my guilt level for leaving the 2F religion on this one is reduced.

I think an interesting swap to consider would be the "newer" Tundra 5.7L engine. I have no idea what would be required to get one installed but the numbers I've seen on it are impressive to say the least.

i dont think the engine is impossible to put in there . steering could be fun . but the bloody transmission has to be 4' long .

i think the best v8 to put in a cruiser to just drive around and have fun with is a 5.3 vortec mpi engine .

my old sbc with a quadrajet works great . would i change it out for a little 4bta . maybe if one fell in my lap . my landcruiser is sort of my other vehicle that i use when i dont want to hop into my diesel to drive two minutes i would hate to loose that .

How much bigger of a job is putting in a fuel injected v8? This is something i would have to pay a shop to do.

Again I give you the
Jagotta

ok , thanks for all those advice :)
nice

more parameters for all of you :
- price : not really a problem, between about 3000 - 4000 € for total swap
- engine we have now on the fj40 : 3F (yes not F, not 2F...but 3F !), this vehicule came from USA
- Hp we want : minimum 300 HP - automatic transmission that go on a short wheel base
- No carb, but fuel injection, i don't want any problem when truck is on a big climb.
- smoke legal is not a problem, we don't have it in France (we don't care in fact ! ;) )
- easy to wire, if a simple wire kit exist , could be nice
- transfert ??? wich with automatic ?, we want automatic, but...we have manual H55F transmissions also..so choice is difficult...i know that h55F only support 200 HP...after it's critical..

i was looking for vortec 5.7, from corvette...seems nice , but i hear the sound of a 350 sb with fuel injection (sorry in monster garage, on a bronco i think, and it's...nice !!!)...
here in france it's difficult to find V8 engine...we have somes, but on mercedes and bmw...or jaguar ;)
but...it's not easy i think for tranny adaptation..

i'll continue to read your advice, maybe i'll find !

thanks

oh yes, last news !, i buy a 1964 FJ40... ;)

Odyssey battery - sweet.

IMHO - TBI 350. Look for the LT-1 out of the roadmaster. Cheap, powerful.

I have the "basic" tbi w the GM performance serp kit. Does everything on and off road that I want it to do; mated to a yota 4 speed, t-case, and crawl box...and I try to beat the crap out of it at every opportunity.

Again I give you the
