Nice!! Congrats on finding a sweet ride! Another HJ61 in Colorado! I'm up in Loveland. I've had mine for about 2 1/2 years. I have 395,000km on mine:) I know it's been covered a bunch already, but my glow screen light doesn't come on until it gets low teens. Do you not have a choke on it? Mine has a choke. Another thing to keep your eye on is the Oil Pressure gauge. You have the same exact interior as me (including the wall to wall carpeting.) The dude who had mine before me installed a mechanical oil pressure gauge and I am so happy he did! It is awesome. I'd recommend that upgrade. When is the last time a quart of BG244 was run through the fuel system? I get white smoke when I'm getting build up. If you're having trouble passing emissions, that stuff is voodoo! Our rides are almost identical, down to the diving board front bumper and the PTO winch. Mine has a different paint job but is a high roof too. I am getting some clicking on my sunroof. I think the gears on it are stripping out, but I haven't torn into it yet. I am looking for the big hose that connects the turbo to the air cleaner. If you find a good source for parts, I would appreciate the info. :)

Just a suggestion, but welding a full exhaust up in a driveway or garage sucks if you don't have a bender. I'd suggest you head to AA Performance Muffler on south Broadway. Would take them a few hours to whip up an exhaust, and a full exhaust will probably be under $500. Most of us in the Denver metro use them, because they are awesome.

Is it the nut on the stud that you can't get out? And are you trying to take the entire exhaust manifold off, or just the downpipes off the back of the turbo? If it's the downpipe, I'd simply drive it to AA like that and let them give it a go, bringing a couple new exhaust studs with you to replace those. I'm quite sure that they are used to dealing with stuck hardware. ;)

As to your slowly losing power note--fuel filter. Toyota can get them, @beno probably has some lying around, and NAPA carries a filter that will work. I carry a spare all the time, because if you get bad fuel it's a serious headache, and even worse if you don't have a fresh filter in the truck with you.

That's a great looking 61! That's two that I know of in Golden, another 3 in the Denver Metro, and two up in the mountains (including the one in my driveway). The HJ61 is definitely one of the best cruisers Toyota ever made. The 12HT is just so incredibly well matched to the 60 series it's scary.

Dan

And you can add one in Loveland, Co. Although I bought mine in Denver, so it might already be accounted for in your list. :) Do you guys have a good place to find parts in Colorado? I am in need of the hose that connects the air cleaner to the turbo. Mine was previously broken and fixed with silicon, (I didn't know this when I bought it) and is now sporting a sweet duct tape patch job.

Really sweet looking rig. Super jealous. I ve seen you rolling around in it locally. Hope to see it up close some time.

Cheers from a local!

@beno

Not just in Colorado, but for ANY land cruiser bits. ESPECIALLY the non-US spec bits.

Onur is the man.

Nice to know there's some more HJ's locally...I'm currently digging through a huge mound of electrical s*** that the PO really messed up. I may have to come pay you a visit and check out a few things are wired on your cruiser for comparisons sake. I haven't found any parts sources locally yet, just the standard online destinations (SOR, cruiserparts.net, etc.,)

As far as the choke, there's technically no choke wired to the engine, just the pedal linkage "choke".

Thanks for the heads-up on the oil pressure gauge, I'll definitely add that to my list of to-do's along with a new tach, a boost gauge and an EGT gauge. I ran through some $15 injector cleaner stuff, but I'll keep the BG244 in mind if I don't pass emissions (taking it in this week so I'll know soon)

Hey Dan, thanks for the heads-up on @beno, good to have another source if I need anything. Who are the others local to golden? I haven't seen any other rigs rolling around here and it'd be awesome to make some good LC buds...all my friends are into jeeps . Also thanks for the heads-up on fuel filter a few posts back - I've been slacking on my replies, but I've got a new one & the bosch primer pump going in soon - maybe tomorrow depending on my energy levels. They were meant to go on this weekend, but I spent the entire weekend trying to hunt down electrical gremlins instead :(

Yea, your right. The chokenis just connected to the pedal. But it's nice to be able to chokenis and walk away for a second.

I'd be happy to let you take a look at my rig
I used the cheaper stuff for fuel additive too, but it did almost nothing. The bg244 really did the trick. I had to run two bottles but it dropped me from a 14 on the test to a 4. Pretty amazing. I've got a problem with my rig running after I turn the key off. I think I have a vacuum leak somewhere, so I'll be running that down over the next week...

Time for an update - been too busy working (on both the cruiser, and at the place that pays for the cruiser) to type lately!

I'll start with 3 (4?) weekends ago - as I mentioned previously, we cut up the old exhaust & fabbed a (mostly) new one - the "one or two" rusty spots the dealer disclosed could have been more accurately described as: "almost rusted through just about everywhere" so it was time to fab up a new one. Thanks to @DanS HJ-45 for the suggestion for the shop on broadway - I wish I had the budget to take advantage of their services. A 3" exhaust & downpipe is in the future, but for now, I've got to stick to getting everything 100% functional before I start upgrading, and getting functional has to come on a bit of a budget, unfortunately. So we fabbed a new exhaust up (took most of a saturday to get done, but I'm really pleased with the results.

The old exhaust: (literally sheared off the flex pipe and the end of the exhaust with fairly light hand pressure)

new one at ~90% done. (sorry for the crappy lighting - it was dark and I was hungry)

We coated the exhaust in a bake-on engine enamel to try and keep it intact until it's time for the big upgrade to a 3" unit. We decided to route the exhaust out the side of the cruiser instead of straight out the back, which I'm quite pleased with.

The finished product attached (don't worry, that's just some penetrant spray on the concrete, nothing else :)

Three weekends ago, I was pretty busy, so I just did an oil change (delo 5w40 & WIX 51627) and a transmission/transfer case oil change (SAE90 API GL4-5), and threw a new air filter in (forgot which one, a WIX something or other)

Two weekends ago, I took a trip up to Crested Butte for some skiing and :beer::beer:. Averaged 25 mpg there & back on 1 tank - pretty excited about that. The cruiser performed perfectly, had no problems, and got a bunch of locals really excited about the rig - I got probably 20+ comments over three days, and I barely even drove it anywhere -- every time I went outside to grab something, there just happened to be someone there, and they said something every time. Pretty fun experience, and the views were awesome :) I unfortunately forgot to take any pics of the cruiser, but here's one at the top of a mountain for good measure.

Congrats on the new exhaust. It looks pretty sweet. I wish I could weld so I could fab my own. Mine's starting to look pretty worn out too.

Last weekend the electrical gremlins started coming on in force...I bought a POS Pyle 24v compatible head unit to replace the non-functioning stock unit - I'm not ready to do a full solar converter install, so I figured this would hold me over until I'm ready to do some serious wiring, and also have enough $$ saved to put in a quality unit. Plus, it was like $35, so I figure, what the hell, it's basically disposable.

I pull the dash off, and start sorting out the wiring - nothing is the same color, or position as any service manual I can find, so I know I'm in for a bit of a rocky install. Little did I know how true that was going to be.
My radio harness - looks stock, but it's definitely not.
FullSizeRender.webp

I use the battery trick to find & label the speakers, which is easy enough. I'll list out what I could figure out just in case someone else has this same issue in the future.
  • Front Right: + Green, - Blue
  • Front Left: + Pink, - Purple
  • Rear Right: + Red w/ Blue Stripe, - White w/ Brown Stripe
  • Rear Left: + Black, - Yellow
I was never able to find any connectivity for Brown, Grey w/ Brown Stripe, and Red w/ Blue Stripe #2 (yes there are two of them ?!?)
There was absolutely no power coming into the harness at any point, and yes I checked the fuses, cross referenced the wiring diagrams, and consulted the FSM. There was also (as far as I could tell) no ground wire in the harness either.

At this point, I'm pretty frustrated, but mainly just confused...who removes power from a stock harness, then plugs the radio back in?!? I was hoping that this wouldn't be a sign of things to come...but unfortunately it has turned out to be a portent of doom in terms of electrical issues with the rig.

For power, I end up cannibalizing the power to the clock (which has been only intermittently working for the entire time I've had the cruiser) for constant 24V so as not to lose memory (lol)), and I just ground to one of the brackets in the dash. I solder all the wires to their corresponding places, and turn ACC to on. The radio works! A moment of joy!...until I turn the key off and on again, and the memory doesn't work. :bang:

At this point, I'm really beyond caring about this particular issue because
1) I never listen to the radio, just bluetooth from my iPhone,
2) I'm just going to upgrade this thing pretty soon anyways, and
3) I've got bigger fish to fry. Time to stop :deadhorse:

All seems well and good, except the right front speaker (of course it's this one) isn't working. It's about 1am at this point, and I have work in the morning, so I say screw it, and just leave as is for a while.

I came back this weekend after some other troubleshooting and needing a small win, and eventually figured out that it wasn't my wiring, or the speaker that is the problem - just that the stupid :poop::poop::poop: head unit doesn't output any sound to the right front channel. :censor::censor::censor::censor::censor::censor::censor:

I fixed this particular problem by just wiring the front right channel to the same output as the rear right channel. Not really much else I can do about it at this point.

Congrats on the new exhaust. It looks pretty sweet. I wish I could weld so I could fab my own. Mine's starting to look pretty worn out too.
Just buy a cheap-ish MIG welder and have at a bunch of scrap metal after watching some YouTube vids! (although having a teacher certainly helps a lot) I learned to weld just for this - it's not that hard as long as no one can see how s***ty your welds are. Also invest in a grinder if you haven't already - you're gonna need it for a while :D

I'll update on this weekends fruitless project tomorrow, and in another thread...I think this problem's gonna need it's own thread :censor::worms:

Been a while since the last update - been busy with work & the start of the climbing season :( / :)

The issue I mentioned in the last post was that my running lights don't work. I learned this via a surprisingly polite (and quite amused that I was driving on the right side) Colorado State Patrolman. Luckily, I had just fixed my brake lights the night before! I Still haven't figured out what's causing the running lights to not work. The PO had wired in some switches to the dash that lead to blank wires in the engine bay (and left bare wires unwrapped, which caused a couple shorts (WHAT A :censor: MORON :bang:). My guess is that he f---ed something up with the wiring when he did whatever he did there. I did figure out that the Light Control Relay (90987-01004) was nonfunctional (which I replaced and it still didn't fix the issue) I'm far from an electrical genius (actually, I'm far from even basic competence, probably) so I can't figure out what's truly wrong...and wiring diagrams are still a foreign language to me. Some saturday when the weather sucks I'll buckle down and hopefully figure this issue out once and for all. But for now -- I wired in a switch spliced from the ACC fuse to the PWR wire in the right front running light. The rest of the lights are wired in series -- RHF, LHF, LHR, RHR, so at least I won't get pulled over (for this) (for now).

The rig has also started to run a little bit on the warm side, which is alarming. I've detailed the issue in a separate thread over in the Diesel Tech/24V forum. Feel free to hop over there and give me some advice :)

HJ61 12HT overheating issue

I'm mostly posting for some extra eyes to be on a crazy transmission issue I'm having with my H55F (Thread here), but I'm loooooong overdue for an update. I'll go back through and post way more detailed stories later, but long story short the ol' cruiser was rusting to oblivion, and QUICK, so I had to do something and she spent over a year getting rust repair & paint done. Now she's back and I'm popping out of 3rd gear and having terrible whining and grinding sounds at only 265k and no obvious causes. I'll quote my more detailed post here, but please respond to that thread in regards to that issue, not this thread so that I can keep that thread as informative to future searchers as possible and hopefully make someone's life less stressful (unlike mine right now 😬).
I have a 1987 JDM HJ-61 with the 12H-T, 263,000 km on the odometer with zero previous transmission issues, and all of the sudden, I'm having a terrible whining/grinding noise coming from my transmission, an H55f-K052, which the search feature on MUD tells me means I have a 37 ring : 10 pinion, w/ open diff. Of course this happens a week before a giant rock climbing/road trip from Denver to Vegas—although I suppose this beats getting stuck in bumf—k nowhere Utah or Nevada with a shot transmission and no cell signal.

I did an extensive search of H55 issues on here, and it seems wildly surprising that an H55 with this few kms would be having this kind of issue. Any pointers on what to try would be hugely helpful—or if worse comes to worse, a great shop to get this fixed in the Denver area

Symptoms:
- nasty whine/grind in 1st through 3rd, although it's inconsistent in 1st and 2nd.
- 3rd has popped out of gear a few times with quite a loud bang. This has happened under both high and low loads and throughout the RPM range.
- 5th makes a nasty sound intermittently
- 4th is perfect, zero sound, zero whine.
- sounds go away as soon as I put the clutch in

What I've tried/checked so far
- checked transmission fluid level (full—immediately some poured out as soon as I pulled the fill plug).
- adding or removing pressure from the shift lever does not change the sound or symptoms at all.
- some fine sparkles in the gear oil that spilled out, but no chunks. I don't have any extra gear oil so I'm not going to do a full drain until it comes in tomorrow, although I have the bypass/equalization hose so I doubt it would be too low without noticing on the transmission as well). I could be wrong about how much sparkle is in (i.e., it might be BAD), but I've never had any amount of sparkles in any kind of oil I've changed so I don't have a frame of reference.
- checked xfer case level (low, but not sure how much. I have some MT-90 coming in tomorrow to check.)
- whine is same in 4Lo as it is in 2Hi
- clutch fluid is full and clean, and no sign of leaks from either the master or slave cylinders. Clutch action seems totally normal.

Other Relevant Info:
- I've had no issues with the transmission or transfer case previously, it's always shfited perfectly with no signs of grinding or hard shifts.
- Just did a new carpet install which involved removing the shift boot for fitment, which I know can occasionally put some pressure on...some kind of spring that I forget what it's called but came up in my searching. But since adding/removing pressure to the shift lever doesn't do anything, I'm doubtful that this is the cause.
- Just did my valve clearances, went great and had zero issues, although I can't imagine how it could be connected. There were only 3 out of spec even after 4 years since the last time they were done.
- Truck sat for over a year (15 mos, IIRC) getting (a f'n saga of) rust repair and a full respray. But I've been through a few tanks of diesel since then with no issues, and as I said, the fluids were all full and no signs of leakage from either the transmission or transfer case.
- I've had this truck for 5 years now, and the mechanicals have been flawless, no signs of poor treatment by previous owners.
- I do most of my own wrenching, but don't have the time or space in my garage right now to undertake a rebuild myself
- AFAIK has never had anything larger than 33s mounted, it's on my 31 winter set right now

Here's a link to a video I just shot driving around my neighborhood. The sound is fairly representative, although it sounds MUCH louder in the video than in real life—I think because my phone was touching the steering wheel.

Someone please tell me I'm a huge idiot and I'm missing something simple and don't have to rebuild or replace my transmission, I just spent a metric 💩-ton of $$$ over the last year doing a full course of rust repair and a full respray. And then new carpet, full dynamat, new rubbers and seals, all new glass, some electrical repairs, new snorkel, new decals, new emblems, new grille and headlight buckets,...the list goes on.
