Just did this mod, awesome! Thank you landtank & RavenTai! I wish everything was this easy hahah... It didn't take me 10 minutes like everyone else here, more like 30, & I still managed to muff it up a bit. The hardest part for me was prying the translucent cover off the back of the module... I ended up snapping one of the small white tabs off. No biggie, nothing some Gorilla tape can't fix ;)

OK, so I looked it up in the original thread, you can grab these locally at any electronics store as well:

"The diode can be a 4001 available at any Radio Shack. There part number will be different, but ask for the diodes and then look yourself for the one that has 4001 written on it."

Just did this mod today... Used the 1N4001 diode from Radio Shack... works perfect... windows operating 40% faster after cleaning contacts... some of the contacts were so bad I had to use an ignition point file to get them clean...

Finished the Auto Up Mod tonight and it works like a charm. Very nice and simple modification.

Although by no means necessary, I'd suggest at least trying to fit the diode on the component side of the PCB. Using @NLXTACY's diode - which has long leads - I successfully fed the diode leads through the wicked holes from the component side of the board with some patience and a jewelers screwdriver. Made for a very clean install. I did this without removing the PCB from the assembly.

Note that the cathode (striped) end of the diode is oriented inboard on the PCB per the printed schematic on the component side of the board.

I noticed about a 20% improvement in window speed after cleaning all contacts while doing this mod.

Thanks to @landtank and all the others that have contributed to this thread over the years.

Excellent!

I'm hoping one of you lads might be able to help me. I did the diode mod but couldn't work out how to get to the contractors. Do I need to take it apart further?

Greetings! I'm assuming by "contractors" you mean the switch that needs to be physically modified? It's very easy to remove - just remove the retaining clip on the pin that slides through the switch. Then remove the pin and switch. File down about half the plastic tab on the back of the switch to allow for the necessary travel for the mod.

If you meant something else, let me know. I'll try to answer as best I can.

I'm very particular and disassembled the entire assembly to clean all the contacts. Works real smooth now. Windows are faster now. Be careful - lots of little springs!

Good luck!

Being careful it's kinda vague .. be very very careful springs and contacts can fly all over the place .. not to mention the window lock button when you remove it ..

Couldn't agree more - be very, very, very careful! Do this indoors on a table with a white towel under your work and with good lighting. Lots of very tiny pieces that are easily lost if you aren't careful!

on a related note .. be sure to have your AC on working condition ( and heater by this time of the year ) along with your windows up .. if you screw it up at least you will be able to keep your Cruiser closed .. :D

Sorry, Auto correct changed it to contractors on me. I did mean contacts. I removed the switch cover easy enough but couldn't fin the part the everyone seamed to be cleaning copious amounts of black stuff out of. Do i have to actually unscrew the main body and go from there?

I took it all the way apart and thoroughly cleaned everything, which is why I wouldn't attempt @Jorgito's current project because I'd be cleaning for months!

Take your time. I used CRC's sensitive electronics spray and q-tips to get everything super clean. Mine wasn't as bad as some, but there was a lot of black residue.

Be especially careful with the window lock switch. There's a very tiny spring in there that will easily fall out. It's not too bad/difficult to replace after you study how it works, but if it falls into your carpet or something you're done. Be especially careful with that switch.

I sprayed everything down real good and let it dry overnight. Works great now.
