Alright...how much did you get it for?

You really don't want to know. I'm sure many would think I need to have my head examined as it didnt come cheap. I've wanted one since I had my last 40 back in the '02 timeframe, and told myself I'd have one on my next 40. I was disappointed to find out they were discontinued around the time I sold my last one. It did come cheaper than the knock off version quoted at $1K from the builder here in Texas.

Does anyone know what they sold for new? I'm guessing $650-$700?

We all have something on our trucks that we over-paid for, just like we have something that we "stole". It all balances out in the cruiser world.

Go to Harbor Freight and buy a cheap ass bender + 2 joints of 1 1/2" black pipe from McCoys + 1 Saturday afternoon + welder +2 cases of beer = the creation of your choice..... That's what I did...:wrench: may not be perfect, but it has knock down power.. that's all I care about......

Awesome. Just awesome.

Take a look at this...looks something like the shape you were after? Too bad it won't fit a 40.

Exactly. That's a Safari Guard, and that's very close to the tubing configuration I'm after.. I attempted to order one for my FJ62 several years ago. They took my order by phone, then called back a week later and said they were going out of business. I seem to have a knack for bad timing.

Here is a pic of mine. Stout as :censor:, and an 8274 mount to boot. Not sure if I will be keeping it or going with a newer ARB.

If you look closely, the bottom edge on the driver is turned up. That is 3/8" steel. Probably saved the truck from something serious in a previous life.

Those looked good but they buckled in the middle under heavy pulls. The shallow
top leg of the channel offered no support and the center would buckle under load.
A couple Rover guys contacted me about a redesign. I couldn't get them to drive from California and leave me their truck.

Who built that bumper? It's very close to what I've been trying to describe. There was an outfit in Albuquerque that used to build a bumper that looked very similar. I think the name was Stout, but they've been out of business for years.

Dave, I know the Safari Guard bumpers weren't rugged, but I never wheeled the 62 and they were a step up from stock. In the end it made no difference since I couldn't buy one.

Not sure on the maker. It may very well be a one off production. But the 40 spent most of it's life before me in NM, close to ABQ.

I'll be home on break in a few days and I'll take some more pictures then and post them up.

Were the 60 versions as expensive as the Rover units. I thought the Rover bumpers were going for 1100.00. That might have been for the LR series.

That sounds about right.. ten years ago when they were around. Because they moved all bumper production to Malaysia and Thailand they would probably still be within 100.00 of that. When I went on a trip with ARB's 2nd man in 2002 he told me that the cost of producing the 60 series front in their overseas factory was about 80.00 US. That was finished and boxed. I'm guessing the workers there don't have a retirement plan

The 60/62 version was $650. I think that was in 2004? I guess they thought Rover owners were richer? Or dumber?

I just remembered. The name of the shop was Stout Equipment, in Albuquerque. They specialized in fabbing front and rear bumpers for Toyotas. The owner closed his shop several years ago and moved to New York. Your bumper looks like some of his work.

Looks like it's time for a road trip Lee , come up to Illinois and I'll build you one that doesn't cover up the damned headlights . Why do they do that ?? The one safari design is acceptable but I'd like something to protect the body/turn signals without causing interference with the other idiot drivers out there ....

I actually have a factory bumper. The last post was about the ARB measurements

I have a factory winch bumper I think it was a dealer option. It's set up for a 8274. I bought it from Wimberley. Anyways I actually don't own it anymore since I just sold it but I could get measurements tomorrow???

Seems like I missed out on some good bumper talk while looking for Les's hog....

everything for rovers are more money. The fewer that sell the higher the price.
Can you find an ARB for a Rover under $1000.00? No more material that the 60 or 80, just no sales numbers
