Nice new addition!

Now, what the heck is this?
I’ve been going on and on about these 7xx series Athol’s, here you have one the whole time and not a peep! Dude!

Lol I posted it way back on the first or second page. Haven't kept up on everything in the past few
It's a 712

So glad you could snag it! That is all you’ll EVER need and will be in your family for a long long time. It’s rare to know you are buying something you will NEVER have to replace.

It's fitting because I just had a son 3 weeks ago so he'll be getting it someday

No kidding - post #4

No idea how I missed that, almost a Twilight Zone moment.
So far I’ve found that the jaw widths don’t match the last digit of the model number like most of the other Athols. I’m going to guess that the jaws are wider than 2”.(?)

On the Athol 712 trying to get it apart to clean/grease it probably never has been.
Don't know all the terminology but how does that pin holding in the gear piece come out? Is it threaded or just pushed in and now stuck?

@TomH I don't know how I missed that you already printed your own baby bullet. That's very cool.

I skimmed back to my first post in here to avoid another double posting of media. I could have sworn I posted pics of my first "real" vise. A Columbian 605-M2.

The swivel lock levers are both completely hammered. The jaws close fairly square, and the cross-hatching is still reasonably sharp on the jaws.

Also is a picture of a small 3-1/2" Fuller that moved from my parents house out to my bench when we got our house. It's had those Oak "jaws" on it since I was in junior high. My Dad thinks that the real jaws are still around someplace. Ha! I doubt it, but who knows.

please ignore the complete chaos in the background of my pictures, I feel like I'm a hoarder, but I've been getting rid of way more than I take in for at least a year now.

Although, I did just grab another Columbian on Friday: A 503-1/2

The hole for that pin should go all the way through. Turn the stationary over and punch it through from the bottom.

Thanks. I tried to haggle based upon it "missing" a swivel base, but no dice. Also, now that I've done some slight research I see a great many 503-1/2 that are fixed base. Still, $55 seemed ok given the current demand for vises and other old heavy stuff.

there is no such thing as hoarding when it comes to tools...! It's called "Proactive Planning" (TM)... :)

There’s a 3/4” buttress thread main screw out of a 3” or 3-1/2” Starrett on eBay right now

I saw that but have concluded that the screw has to come out of the same size vise. It would work but might not open all the way. All the different size vises have different opening lengths. I also need a nut and would like to get both parts at once if possible. There are two damaged 924's on ebay but each one is about $300. I could spend $600 and end up with a couple really nice vises.

I like that 3 1/2, it fits my 4 inch and smaller rule.

The Columbians are numbered based on size and configuration.

First number is configuration:
2 is pipe jaws
4 is swivel jaws
5 is fixed base
6 is swivel base

Last number is jaw width.

So your 503 1/2 is a fixed base with 3 1/2 inch jaws.
Your 605 is a swivel base with 5 inch jaws
@bhsdriller 's 606 is a swivel base with 6 inch jaws

My conclusion is the same as yours. Even down to the same model number, with possible exceptions. The screw diameter and type of thread are the main points of note, extending to what vises used what diameter stock and what thread and pitch. Something like this pops up, it’s good info to pass along.

Part of my recent "hoarding:" a colleague gave me a Thomas air-pac compressor, and I scored a free nitrogen rig for beer from a client (bottle, regulator, keg tap, hoses)
I did watch a restoration video of an old steam fitters vise. That things was pretty cool.

@MrMikeyG Speaking of steamfitters vises... There is a Vanderman #3 vise about an hour from me that I have been threatening to save. These are SUPER beefy vises.

Don’t think I’ve seen one of these
