Any good child seats for the FJ80? Off-road Friendly??

I currently have a Recaro Signo and need to switch to a larger convertible seat as my son has turned 4 and has grown a bit. The Recaro fits snug in the back of the 80 and is easy to install. I tried a Britax Frontier 85 yesterday and the base is actually too large to fit properly in the vehicle. I could get it tight and secure, but then it had a port list due to the shape of the 80 series rear bucket seat. It is also a tad to deep, and the base protrudes forward of the seat bottom by a good bit.

I have a Evenflo all in one in my wife's Limited Sequoia. It's nice because it can be adjusted sitting tall when he's awake or lying down when he's sleeping. This Evenflo Symphony 65 e3 All-In-One Convertible Car Seat is the only car seat you will ever need as it accommodates children weighing 5 100 lbs. The seat is designed for rear-facing use for infants, forward-facing use for toddlers with the internal harness and use as a belt-positioning booster for older children. The Superior e3 Triple-Layer Foam provides protection by significantly reducing the forces in side impact crashes through advanced energy absorption and an expanded zone of protection, while the five-point safety harness simply slides for an accurate fit. The ReclineRight upfront multi-position recline allows you to adjust the seat to suit your childs needs, and the removable head and body support pillows provide added comfort. The SureLATCH Connectors allow quick, secure installation, while the easy-off, machine-washable pad requires no harness rethreading.

In my 80 I have the Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite™ Convertible Car Seat 22456CAO. Designed for your growing child, the Alpha Omega Elite™ Convertible Car Seat is three car seats in one: a rear-facing infant car seat, a forward-facing car seat and a belt positioning booster! It features our QuickFit™ Harness System that never needs rethreading and a 3-position recline that adjusts easily with just one hand.

Both are great seats and offer great protection. I really like the recline features because I don't like my sons head kinked when sleeping. Also the Safety 1st has armrests so my son was grabbing on and having a blast when wheeling in the 80.

I didn't want to have to keep on buying, so that's why i choosen these seats.

Peg perego makes a mini 40 series called the gaucho. I just got hooked up with one for my little guy. I'm modding it with a 24v system for speed and led's for bling. Gotta start em young.
Hijack over.

thanks !

I guess we should consider the next weakest link. How safe are 15+ year old seatbelts? I would imagine that using the seatbelt in car seat duty could be considered rough service and would shorten the life expectancy.

i would think that as long as they are not frayed or otherwise damaged, i would think that they should be ok. I have torqued the ones in my 91 pretty tight and no problems. But I am by no means an expert on that.

Britax Boulevard and Recaro booster seats for my girls. With the new law that kids need to be in boosters until they're 8 or 4'9", they're going to be in them for a long time yet. It's worth investing in a good seat.

Also a Recaro fan for the Cruiser. Great side and head support/protection, and has held up very well. Not sure of the model, but it is a booster which looks like one of their racing seats. Likely my son is more comfortable than I am on the long trips.

Run the Maxi-Cosi brand in the other vehicles, and they too are pretty well built.

Remember that some of the rules for car seats go out the window when you're talking offroad driving, and this is what the discussion is about. Rear facing while offroad? Does it matter? Rear facing seats are better for head on collisions so that the child's back is cradled by the seat itself in an impact and not by the straps. How fast are you driving off road? Are you on a trail? In most cases a head on collision is not the most likely accident!

I would worry more about what is in the cabin of the truck that can become a projectile in case of rollover when offroading, more than what direction/type of seat the kids is in!

We went from a Britax (Marathon I think it was) to a Recaro Vivo. She's now six and loves the Vivo. Just a FYI.

Bringing back an old thread. Has anyone install rated anchor points for a tether in an 80? My oldest is now 5 and just over 40 pounds but would like to keep him in a harness a little longer. He is itching to get a ride in dads cruiser. My wife has been hesitant to let him in it since he moved from rear facing with just the seat belts.

My wife was the same way for a bit of time when we picked up the 80 for lack of iso-fix mounts.

I figured if they were safe enough to run before iso then the little guy should be good to go in the Recaro. It’s held up great and washes by throwing in the wash on delicate. Had it about three years now.

The other day I pulled out my cargo liner to clean it and spotted the hooks in the floor of the rear. I wonder if you could tie the upper latch strap into one of those somehow? They're bolted into the floor and seem pretty robust to me.

You can, and I've done that but they're not made for that purpose so those liability inclined might say not to use them.

I have our kids car seat strapped to one of those hooks (just the top tether strap, the seat itself is buckled in). I can tell you they were not created for this purpose, however they do appear to be strong enough to keep the top of the seat from moving forward a few inches, which is the purpose of the tether.
