Any good child seats for the FJ80? Off-road Friendly??

x37 on the Britax. It's what's in my back seat right now.

Not to get this sent to chat but current thinking is to keep kids rear facing as long as possible (2 years at least).

BTW, at 1 you kid should still be rear facing. Much safer.

x2

Rear-facing is key; it's not mandated by law but outcomes for spines after wrecks are significantly better. Sunshine Kids Radian XTSL is a great seat for off-roading. It will convert from rear-facing to front facing after the kids get too tall or heavy for rear-facing and is rated to hold them from wee little things until its time for a booster seat, so amortized cost is pretty reasonable.

It's called CYA. Of course they will never endorse a non specified child safety anchor point. But, why wouldn't you use that? Common sense.

I respectfully disagree. Those anchor points are rated to what? If that non-LATCH approved "anchor point" comes loose in an impact (if you have ever unbolted those anchors, you would know that they really aren't that strong of an anchor point), that tethered projectile has the potential to do some serious damage to someone. I've seen first hand what the Britax seats when properly strapped in per their design in our trucks will handle. Our daughter was fine after we rolled our 80 series four or five times at freeway speed. The force occurring in a full speed collision is mind-blowing, so I wouldn't take the chance on using an "anchor point" that isn't designed to handle that amount of sheer force. Maybe it would hold in an impact, but if you are wrong, it has a greater chance of causing a lot more damage. There is a reason why the car seat instructions say to "only use the LATCH strap on a LATCH equipped vehicle".

Another vote for Britax. We have two, one in the wife's Jetta and one in the 80. We wheeled our 80 for a solid 8 hours last fall with baby girl (18 months at the time) sound asleep in the back.

Also another vote for knees in the seat. When I install ours I actually put both knees in it and basically tighten it with my 200 lb a$$ pressing down on it. When I am done it doesn't even wiggle.

As far as front vs. Rear facing, in TN it is still 1 yr and 20 lbs, but if your kid has out grown the infant seat, chances are their feet will hit in a rear facing toddler seat. One good thing about the Britax's is that most of them can go both ways so rear if needed and then flip it around for front facing up to 40 lbs.

There is a reason why the car seat instructions say to "only use the LATCH strap on a LATCH equipped vehicle".

And that reason is general liability not specific. If the car seat is properly installed using the seat belt then the majority of the forces in an accident will be handled by them not the tether/anchor point. It's just supplemental. And there's no more (and I would argue less) likelihood that this anchor could become a projectile in an accident than the myriad other crap we all have stowed in our trucks.

x100 Britax. We have a Decathalon and a Frontier85.

For some reason it seems difficult to get a nice tight install in the 80. More slop than I would expect. In our other vehicles I can get these seats installed with NO movement. I would be interested in any tips or tricks to get these seats installed very tight in the 80.

Also, is there any issue with using the middle position in the second row?

One more time: Britax. Our pediatrician only recommends Britax car seats. We started all of our children in britax infant, moved to britax marathon, and now have britax regents in brown to match the tan leather of the wife's hundred and in blue to match the cloth of my 80.

The middle position in the second row is preferred. Use your knee to press the car seat while you tighten the belt. This helps secure the seat.

Too get them tight in an 80 you really need to get on them

It is a work out

But I was able to get mine tight enough where there was very little movement

Then take the 80 down to your local FD and have them look over the install.

X2 on the Sunshine Kids. Diono I believe took over Sunshine Kids and make an almost identical/excellent product. We use both. These seats include some steel reinforcement, while most appear to be all plastic. They are spendy at around $350, but worth it IMO.

No experience with the Britax, but I know several that use them and like them like others in this thread.

I have two Recaro different Recaro seats that I use for my boys. After seeing the quality of the first I bought a second different model as well and it is just as solid.

They make seats for race cars so I hope they know what they are doing in the safety dept.

I use the recaro's with my lil one no problems so far

Peg perego makes a mini 40 series called the gaucho. I just got hooked up with one for my little guy. I'm modding it with a 24v system for speed and led's for bling. Gotta start em young.
Hijack over.

Britax have steel sub-frames too just FWIW.

And x 2 on putting your knee(s) into them, cinch it down a little at a time and it should be solid. Also, I pulled the headrest so the seat sits back against the seat back better. Mine are so tight that they leave pressed indentations in the seats.

I have a Sunshine Kids seat. I test fit it into the 80 before buying and really liked how it matched the contour of the 80's back seat. It fits the vehicle very well. My only complaint is that my son sits relatively upright in it. Where as the Britax in my wife's Subie he is more reclined. I like how my seat works better as far as adjustments and ease of entry and exit. I think he likes the way he sits better in the Sunshine for seeing out the window. But some of that is just the difference in vehicles too. His head does not fall over when sleeping in the Britax. But he has slept through a lot in my seat while wheeling. Including bending a rear LCA. The Sunshine can be mounted facing forward or rear. But you'd never fit it in an 80 facing rear unless your very short. I could not even get it in the middle with the front seats adjusted all the way back. My wife and I are both tall.

I guess we should consider the next weakest link. How safe are 15+ year old seatbelts? I would imagine that using the seatbelt in car seat duty could be considered rough service and would shorten the life expectancy.
