IT JUST WANTED TO GO.

Dang - sorry to hear that!
I rebuilt mine last year since it was eating oil. I was really on the fence about getting a Grunter Vortex Green from G Turbo. My CT26 is fine, but If I had to do it again I think I would upgrade. It is worth looking into...

Turbos are super easy to rebuild. Once you get it on the bench, we can help you tear it down to inspect and see if a rebuild kit will set it right again.

Oh yeah, make sure you change your engine oil pronto. Don't want that turbo glitter going through your pretty engine.

The drain pan is full. Oil change is already in progress.

The real question is: do I send it back to the semi-local guys with a decent name who rebuilt the turbo, or do I send it to a PNW shop that I have already migrated all of my turbo/injection pump business to? Give the guy who rebuilt it a chance to evaluate his work?

Gut feeling says send it out west and see what they say.

Radial or axial play? Some play radially is OK (see FSM for spec) with journal bearings especially when the car has been sitting overnight with no oil in the turbo.

Pried the turbo off today. Eeeeesh…lots of radial and axial play. Good news is that the turbine wheel is intact - and that it didn’t fragment and trash the motor.

I still don’t if I am going to call the rebuilder or just send it out to another shop.

We had quite the diesel conucipia at the barn today: LHD HJ61, RHD HJ61, 12HT swapped FJ62, turboed 1HZ HZJ79, 1HDT HDJ74….

I wish! I actually bought a second copy recently, picked up a reprint because I had misplaced my 30 year old original manual. So now I’ve got a back up. I was just breaking that one in and getting it dirty for the first time yesterday.

Where did you get that second copy may I ask?

Long time no post. Six weeks ago I was out wheeling with my local Land Cruiser friends, did a cool obstacle, drove up the trail a little bit, parked, and was walking back down a nearly flat dirt road when I slipped and fell. I heard a big crack when I landed. Turns out I broke my distal fibula. Luckily, I did not need surgery, but it’s been six weeks of limping around in a boot and not being able to wrench very much.

Meanwhile, I sent my blown turbo out to Pacific Fuel Injection in Portland, Oregon. They confirmed that the turbo was indeed toast. The bearing blew, scoring the front housing and rendering it unusable. I was able to pick up another CT26 here on mud which they rebuilt and sent back this week. Time to put it all back together and see how the truck runs.

I still have not contacted the original turbo shop. I’m thinking I will probably let bygones be bygones at this point.

If anything sits in my shop for more than five minutes it attracts a pile of crap around it. Time to clean up and get to work.

Turbo in, but I can’t get the damn water line to block to thread it into place. The male side looks like M15 x 1.5, but I wonder if the female side is NPT? Can’t tell if it’s cross threaded, stripped, or just being an onerous pain in the ass. I give up. I’ll work on it tomorrow.

@roma042987 - do you remember?
