I checked out the wiring diagram at work today and had a few ideas.

Clamped my meter back in place and got the same 28-30 ohms.

Shook the rig and I got an intermittent short, managed to get it to stay shorted right at 6 ohms. I disconnected the rear harness section at the firewall and the short went away, we'll this was getting easy.

Knowing what I know about my 40 and what goes were circuit wise, I slid under the passenger side and found a bullet connector that was broken, 4wd switch circuit on the diagram, it has a faint sign of arcing on the tip of the bare connector. A slight tap against the t case and it confirmed what I was suspecting, found my culprit.

Tossed in a new fuse from the 20 amp box in center console and took a test drive.

After the engine came up to temp I reached down to turn the heater on, boom, everything went dead again.

WTF over.

I pulled off to check it out again and noticed the fuse looked funny, dealing with fuses often I knew right away it wasn't a 20 amp fuse.

Upon further inspection I noticed it was a 2 amp fuse!

Tossed a 15 amp in it and drove back home.

Loaded skis and beer.

2 amp?! Maybe time for some readers….

You guys getting the arctic blast or whatever doomsday name this one’s getting over the next week? Forecast as low as -20 here a few days.

Yeah, I'm hoping the arctic weather moves in, we were supposed to get 8+" in the mountains from this last wave but high pressure to the south kept it further north. Tuesday to Wednesday is looking favorable for a significant snow event.

Time will tell.

I'll still be skiing this weekend.

If it does get cold.

The 10 day, I'm glad I moved 2 cords of firewood onto my back porch last weekend.

good to see snow in the forecast....... still early, but am starting to worry about the lack of snow pack and how it might impact my late summer fishing ........
Yeah, late summer fishing isn't looking great given the current snowpack. All of the Snotel sites in the region are at all time lows, Flathead, Clark's Fork, Blackfoot, Lochsa, all of them.

Our July trip may be questionable this year also.

Using your Yeti to keep stuff warm?
Seriously, we did that to keep stuff from freezing yet still refrigerated.
Basically, I leave it bolted down year round, but in the winter I put all my food and beer in it when I'm skiing. Quick, convenient, and keeps everything from freezing.

And my buddies know where to find a cold one when they spot my rig.

-33F this morning.

The 40 is dead.

Cardboard over the grill, heater on the oil pan and battery, and it will fire right up. Of course, if you don't have all the engine compartment tin, you risk freezing fuel lines....
Battery might have been on its way out already, this may have sealed the deal.

Shifting the transmission and pushing in the clutch was like working with a bucket of cold honey.

The Ole diesel dually fired right up though, I'll have to drive it up to the ski mountain tomorrow.

Better treat the fuel a little extra. Although I’m sure it’s pre treated up there.

I keep up on the diesel fuel additives to prevent the fuel from gelling. Last winter I ran it at -25ish, full throttle I couldn't get over 45 mph. It was struggling, that's when I remembered I hadn't treated the fuel in a while. A quick stop at the diesel pumps and a bit of Power Kleen and it was back alive.

Currently -24

a storm rolled through here this week burying my patiently waiting 62(needs and engine rebuild). so i’m driving my little barn fire 40 as my daily. block heater and cardboard worked for me (also a new battery helps a ton). my heater keeps my window clear but my feet are sure cold. 🥶 i need some floor insulation!!

good luck getting yours going again

i feel your pain about cold honey. it feels like i’m turning 37s with no power assist. man things get stiff when it’s this cold.

Wow. It’s crazy cold up there. You get problems south people didn’t even know were problems. What do you actually do to keep your vehicles running? Just go with really light oil weights? At what temp does coolant become slush?

Oil weights usually have a summer and winter for old engines.

Coolant is what it is. As long as you have good coolant, you are ok.

The things I posted above is what you need to do. Block off the front of the radiator with something like cardboard .

Put some kind of heater on the oil pan, or in the coolant system.

Thoroughly warm up the car before running it.

Keep the battery fully charged, trickle charged or warm with some kind of warmer. Fully charged batteries will not freeze.

Also, maintain the sheet tin around your engine. This allows the engine to stay warm while driving esp the fuel system. Gasoline will gel like diesel at -30 F if you let it get cold enough.
