If I am not mistaken the breather has a spring and a ball in it to hold it closed. It pushes out and then burp then reseals. That is why you do not get water in during fording water. It may have an o-ring in there as well. It has been a while since I took one apart.

Mine doesn’t seem to have anything inside of it, maybe that’s the problem. It seems like it is just a cap crimped over the top kind of like an umbrella.

I might take one apart this evening, for tech purposes.

that’s how I always envisioned them. If there’s a spring in there it isn’t springing anymore - on any of my breathers.

As above, so it is on my '63. Crude but at least a pretty small hole dia.
Don't tell anybody but I replaced the front axle and transmission breathers with 1/8" NPT fittings w/ a drop of sealant into the 1/8" BSPT holes.

I run an extended line up alongside my gas filler hose, then it terminates behind the gas cap door.

i had my axle breather plug up on my 62 and it blew oil out the rear seals. that ruined my rear brakes so my fronts were doing more braking and warped the rotors. all because of a little breather. fix them and keep them working or run a line up higher than any water you’ll cross and let it vent!! it gets expensive chasing stuff like i did!

Okay so my 1972 has a plug or something of sort on mine. Looks factory and been on there a long time, I assume. Did they come with sort of breather "cap" like that? I have to rebuild the rear brakes anyway, so I will just run the breather up the aux tank hose like BMThiker

i tied all my breathers together and ran them as one line high on the firewall and just put a valve cover breather on the line for my 40. easy to run lines there and i’ll never go in water that deep

Where did you source the fittings that you used in place of the breather at the axle? I'm assuming you used a hose barb fitting?

on the tcase I just ripped that top part/spring loaded off and pushed some heater/fuel line over the little stub and hose clamped it on. id imagine a barb would be more secure on an axle, but it take a a bit to pop that hose off and on the tcase it doesn’t get that much movement.
my axles are extended but honestly I don’t remember if it’s the same setup or Barbed.

Here is a link to a place that sells a kit with the correct barb. I tried Ace hardware but they did not have metric threaded barbs.

i dont remember exactly where i got my fitting from but it looks just like the one @flee mentioned. then the brake tee fit over it and the hose with a hose clamp holds the tee on the fitting.

I'm not necessarily looking to ford any creeks, my biggest concern is all the gear lube that leaks out of the axle breather. I get tired of cleaning up oil from the rear axle, it leaks a whole lot more oil than my leaky ass transfer case!
