My drivers side hub won't lock anymore (It has worked fine since I did a disk brake swap, which included a change to fine-spline birfields, in about 2002). This is a '74 FJ-40.

When I lock the Passenger Side, I can turn the passenger wheel, and the driveshaft will spin.

When I lock the Driver's Side, I see no action at the driveshaft when I spin the driver's tire.

I took the hub / dial off, and the cavity was pretty packed with grease, and oil that has leaked past my seals. I cleaned all that out. I reassembled the hub, and I am still not getting any lock action.

Where exactly is the engagement of the sliding hub sleeve and the birfield shaft? The splines that are available for engagement (outside of the snap rings) don't seem like they have enough meat to really be the load carrying members. They only look to me to be about 1/4" - 1/2" long.

Is there something going on behind the snap rings that I don't see? Do I need to take the hub body off?

Thanks -

Rocky

I had this happen when I rebuilt my hubs and when I put them all back together I didn't properly put the big spring back on. It worked fine the first few times I tested it but then the spring slipped off.

When you're running this driver's side test, is your passenger side hub locked?

Mark - No it wasn't. I was just locking one hub at a time, the hub on the wheel I was turning. Both tires are up off the ground.

I am pretty 100% certain I no longer have 4 wheel drive, I was out driving in the snow and I could feel the fronts weren't pulling me

Thanks, Mr. C...

I was thinking that the diff oil leak passed the seals, and was filling up the cavity so the sleeve can't engage. But cleaning the majority of the "goop" out of the outer hub cavity hasn't fixed it. I guess I really need to take things apart to see what's what..

Any advice appreciated.

I hate threads that never answer the original question.... (so here you go)

Figured out how the hubs work.

The splined inside of the locking slider-ring DOES slip onto the mating splines of the birfield. All the engagement is outside of the snap ring. The outer dogs/cogs just are used to locate the locking hub into the center of the hub housing.

The reason for the big spring is to allow the locking slider ring to have some play when it hangs up on the birfield splines. So if the birfield, slider ring and hub body are not in perfect alignment, then the slider ring is not engaged, but preloaded by the springs. When (through normal driving) all three line up, then the spring pressure pushes the slider ring into the locked position.

What I think happened is in the cold weather, all the goopy leaked oil mixed with grease gummed up one of my hubs, and didn't let the slider ring engage. It seems to work now.

Yes, I know. The majority came from leaking axle seals. My front end needs a rebuild (seals, gaskets, wipers) - hopefully this spring.
