I'm looking for information on installing air conditioning in an lj70, left hand drive, that did not have air conditioning installed from the factory. Part numbers, a source that can get me part numbers, and any real-world experience if anybody has done this.
Thank you

What year is the vehicle you're looking at? I'm assuming you could just grab all the stuff off a A/C equipped LJ7x truck. Go to Megazip to find part numbers and drawings of the A/C system; it's a great resource for figuring this sort of stuff out.

I can get you a complete aftermarket kit from Europe ready to install, I have a few in inventory but for the 1HZ 7x models but can get them also for the 2LT powered 7x.

Joe,
How difficult would you consider the install on a truck that never had AC? Do you maybe have pics of an install? Does it fit in well with the stock interior?
THANKS!

It blends completely in the stock interior as you remove the big empty plastic box right of the heater core and replace it with the aftermarket ac unit, the aftermarket on/off ac switch is about all that tells the system is not oem on the inside. I have owned a LJ70 with one of these kits a lifetime ago but never installed one ( or any other ac system) yet.

here are some pics of one of the HZJ7x kits

That will give an oem install. Ive tossed around the idea of using a standalone type like a vintage air box. So it uses current compressor and such.
Something to consider is the type of freon used. I remember my Dad had to covert a corevette from R12 to R134. Or something....

I would bet Joes kit uses a "current"(meaning R134a designed) compressor being that its a new kit. Either way, you can put any compressor on any system if you want. Just use the right lubricant for the refrigerant system you are choosing. Even if the kit was with an R12 compressor (again, seems very unlikely) you could easily use different oil and refrigerant upon completion of the install and you are good. Or if you really want just use a different compressor with the rest of the system. No sense in using a limited and unnecessarily simple vintage air kit just because you are worried about an R-12 component.

You are spot on these kits come from Europe so they are R134 , pretty sure it is illegal for many years now in Europe to sell R12 kits

Im guessing the only concern would be using a pulled system from a wreaked 1990 type of cruiser.

I believe the kits from Joe are all new. However, even if they are used, I’d you clean the system with the right cleaner, you are at the same point essentially as a new system(assuming no leaks). It’s just aluminum with open space for refrigerant and oil.

Yes these are brand new for left hand drive 70 series and bolt on applictaions for the 2L/T and 1HZ engines in both 12 and 24v , if you have a different engine the bracket to mount the compressor to the engine is gonna be a diy project.

I converted my 1991 Troopy's original R12 system to R134a. I flushed all the existing equipment, bought new expansion valves and a drier bottle, put in new oil, and recharged with R134a. All works just fine.

That said, Joe's kit is probably less expensive than tracking down a bunch of used OEM parts and definitely cheaper than buying new OEM parts. And it swaps right in to the OEM system. If you've got a non-AC 70-series then his kit really is the way to go.

Mark,

I had the @joekatana a/c kit installed in my LJ77, which did not have a/c before.

Works great with the existing ducts in the truck.

So buying a truck w/o A/C should not be a major concern.

Hi,
I'd be interested in buying and installing one of these kits in my '93 LJ70 with 1KZ-T swap. Are they still available? Where could I get them in Europe? Any information would be much appreciated.
