I found a 2007 Hilux rear axle with an e-locker for 400€. I got an idea for my LJ, but I'm curious if there's some design differences between axles that makes it impossible.

The LJ currently has an open front diff and a rear LSD (stock) with 4.88 ratio. The Hilux axle has a stock e-locker with stock ratio, don't know exactly what but let's call it 3.7.

I want to put my LSD in my front axle, put the Hilux e-locker in my rear axle and my open diff in the hilux axle to sell it.

This means that I have to
1. Put the LSD in the front third member
2. Put the 4.88 gear and pinion in the Hilux third member with the Hilux diff
3. Put the Hilux third member in the rear axle
4. Put the 3.7 gear and pinion in the rear third member with the front diff

I know I have to slightly modify the rear axle to fit an e-locker. Is there any other problems with this? Will the front axle shafts fit the rear diff? Will the rear axle shafts fit the Hilux diff? Will the Hilux third member fit the rear axle? Will the 4.88 gear and pinion fit the Hilux third member and diff?

Hello,

It is possible.

A while ago, @lulo modified his truck's rear axle with a locker like you intend.

I think he used an axle from a later model Prado, but I am not sure.

The search function is your friend.

Great!

I did some research and logical thinking today as well as asking some more specific questions on the Hilux part of the forum and I believe it should work just fine. I think I'll have time to go get the axle in April and have the project gone far enough to work on the axles sometime this summer, so we'll find out for sure then.

I’m sure I read somewhere the factory 4.88 R&P were thinner that the other factory ratios so a spacer was needed?

I don’t have first hand experience of this, except I do have a factory e-locker with a 4.3 that I want to fit to my LJ78…. Eventually I will pull it apart to find out!

It's a bit confusing what's possible and what's not since I have a thread about the same thing going on in the Hilux section. We've concluded that it won't fit without modifications over there, but I didn't get an answer on if a spacer would fix it. I might still buy the axle though, even if it doesn't fit my LJ I believe I can sell the axle for almost twice the price if I assemble the brakes and fix the broken diff lock actuator motor.

The diff wont just be drop in because the axle casing is cut away for the diff lock fork. But from my research this should be fairly easy to recreate using a gasket as a template.

As far as I know it’s only the R&P that “might” not swap over, so either a spacer or aftermarket R&P will be needed. But again this isn’t my first hand experience.

I haven’t had to pull the diff out of my LJ78 yet, but once I eventually have I will compare the R&P with the Hilux locker I have.

I knew I'd have to modify the axle housing slightly, thanks for the pictures though. They make it very clear.

Will you update this thread once you get to comparing R&P?

Good evening from the Swiss Alps,

15 years ago with the BIG help of my cousin, we installed the Rear Diff E-Locker from a KZJ-90 in the Rear Axle of my ex-LJ/KZJ-70 in Spain, sorry but I don't have many photos of the process.

The Relays to activate/desactivate the Locker:

If you have any question, I try to help you ok, but that modification was done long time ago, and maybe I cannot remember everything, but it is possible to do, and in my case, the e-locker did work always perfect without problems.

Good luck and i will see your work.

We'll see if I do it at all, the 400€ axle got sold and most of them are twice as expensive. I might just pay the extra 200 for an air locker that fits without modifications, or keep it unlocked.

What ratio are kzj90s?

If not 4.88, did you use a spacer and the stock LJ gears, aftermarket 4.88 gears, or did you change the ratio to stock KZJ?

Hi,

I cannot remember what Ratio had this KZJ-90 Rear Diff, but we installed a new 4.88 Gear&Pinions and refurbished the complete axle with OEM Bearings, Oil Seals, etc. It is better to do a big and not cheap job, and after the axle is ready to Rock n' Roll.

But if you don´t want to have headaches adapting this e-locker, buy a ARB Air-Locker and happy life.

Or if you don´t really need a Rear Locker, spend that money traveling through your beautiful land.

Good luck.
