I think I'm going to freshen up the air cleaner housing on my 1973 FJ40 and that will require removing the badly worn decal on the top. Not a big deal because several places sell repop's. Well here's my question.... why is my factory stock decal RED on silver but every single decal I find is BLACK on silver? Is this another one-off deal for a '73 and there isn't enough demand to make a run in red? Or is it a super top secret ultra rare air cleaner that no one else has? 🤔 😁

Either way, it will look great with a fresh powder coat and whatever decal I get....I was just curious.

No. That is the super DOUBLE top secret ultra super rare air cleaner that absolutely no one has ever even heard of.
No doubt ToyotaMatt has several stickers just like that in his shirt pocket.
But that aircleaner housing might look good with some linseed oil rubbed in and the old sticker remains...

Oh wow.....I didn't know they made a DOUBLE top secret model! 😆 James Bond will be jealous of me!!

That's a great idea with the linseed oil. I'd rather keep it original looking if possible. I just got a super cool non-USA aluminum valve cover from @ToyotaMatt that is in original unrestored condition so if I can keep from restoring the air cleaner housing it will look much

I am a big fan of the linseed oil. Boiled linseed oil.
Do not mention super cool aluminum valve covers or i may feel the need to post pics. Again.
Those are nuts from Matt though

@ToyotaMatt Take your advice I will. Pictures of unobtanium valve cover provide I will....cleaned up as soon as the air cleaner is. ;)

I took a quick peak before I headed to work this morning. @Pighead I'm not sure linseed oil is enough for this thing.....at least the top. The bottom might clean up pretty good but the top section is pretty nasty. We'll see. I'd really like to be able to save that decal if possible.

So does anyone know why I have a RED decal? I'm gonna guess that it really is a 1973-only type of deal? The part number on my decal (17700-60304) is different that all the reproduced decals I've seen....some by only the last digit.....so I'll bet it will be impossible to find the same one.

looked on toyo and it seems it is a 72' thing... was superseded to 17700-60305 for 73-74

you have a late 72' build truck?

funny thing is the number comes up good at a few forklift sites as TY17700-60304... most likely a dead number if ordered... but you never know

@JohnnyC You hit the nail on the head! My FJ40 is a 12/72 production date.

I searched that number and found the same thing......FORKLIFT. Everywhere I could find it was discontinued (no surprise) and honestly I'd bet even if I could find one for sale the dang thing probably wouldn't come with the decal. LOL

I'll try the linseed oil trick. If that doesn't work....I guess I'm going with black and silver.

FYI I had linseed oiled rags smoke before … to get rid of them do not just throw in trash … put in ziplock with water and get air out… then chuck it

Your house or garage will thank you

I thought it was acrock till I saw it lol

I spent a little time cleaning the air cleaner housing this evening and the applied a light coat of boiled linseed oil. The result is pretty good in my opinion. No, it's not perfect, but its original and fits the look of the rest of the engine compartment well.

@Pighead Thanks for the tip!
