first off yes i have done a search which has lead to this question i need to replace the converters on my 96 and have two high flow converters to replace mine the question is are two required in order to satify the o2 sensors or will just on due i have seen pics with just one converter and custom exhaust just putting one on would simplfy my life i just don't want to do the job twice

one will do. Most seem to go with the magnaflow.
I beleive the O2 sensor is upstream from the cat so neither are required to satisfy the o2 sensor
one upstream and one downstream on a 96
(raventia got me in another thread same thing) I didnt know the 95-97 had that kind of set up

Yep--just replaced mine. On my 96, the front one is found under the front passenger seat in front of the Cat. The rear one sits behind the rear cat is covered with a heat shield and a pain to replace. The heat shield is actually held on by the 02 sensor.

Magnaflows better than Flowmaster 40s?
Is the Magnaflows fits into the OEM setup (bolts) or do you need to cut and weld?
You need to cut it either way. The front cat is welded to the down pipe, then bolted to second cat, which is bolted to the rest of exhaust.
I'm not going to weld mine, I'm using a clamp. Cut it, use a pipe expander (loaner tool from autozone), and then clamp it. Then I'm putting a flex pipe in behind that to make up the length difference.
The Magnaflow is quite a bit cheaper than the Dynomax

Jeg's doesn't carry it, which is why I didn't buy it (was ordering other stuff from them and wanted it to all be one order), but they have an offset version that is cool. It would gain you some ground clearance as the whole cat is to the top side.
I'll post up some pics of mine once the cat gets in. It's a new item for Jegs, and no one told me when I ordered it it would be back ordered for 4 weeks, if they had I would have ordered the offset cat from a different vender.

2.5" cause that's what the downpipe is. It should fit with sliders easier than the stock cat's since it's not as tall. I'm building my own sliders, and I'm stalled on the passenger side until I get this in cause I want it to work properly with this cat.
I'd just add that I installed a 3" exhaust that used the MagnaFlow/CarSound 3" catalytic converter (single - #43009) with the O2 bungs welded in front and back of it and a MagnaFlow muffler (don't know which one?) that is pretty short and flat. It was a bit too loud for my tastes and I added an aftermarket resonator up above the rear axle. This setup passed CA emissions with better numbers than my stock dual cat setup without any forced induction.

That's the cat I'm using - or will be using - in 2.5". I have it and the flex pipe welded together (single cat). But I just haven't had time to work on it - transfercase seal took priority. I'll post up once it's in.
My cat went bad about 15k miles ago. I decided to go to Midas and get the Magnaflow highflow Cat installed 3" i believe. They cut the pre cat and cat out of the existing system and welded a straight tapered tip pipe in place where the pre-cat was and then the Magnaflow to the pipe and and then another small tapered pipe to meet the other side of the existing pipe past the cat.
I think it added some HP i mean like 1.5hp or something like that, the truck felt much more peppyer in mid-range and added a nice v8 sound to the tail pipe!!
I live in NY and we have the same or simular emmissions testing as you guys do in CALI and i pass no prob, remember, these trucks just get hooked up to the comp and tested for any MIL codes there really is no running of the truck involved thats what my Toyota service buddy told me (becuase they are all time 4wd).

In California the truck will be subject to a tailpipe test. The only limitation is that it isn't run on the dyno because it is full time 4wd. There is also a full visual, so I don't know how they treat the single cat. I'm not sure why toyota put two on to begin with (on the 95-97 in series).
They probably did the tailpipe test, actually as i am looking at my Insp receipt it states, emission exhaust probe, then a check then a few other items like tires, lights, wipers, etc.... So yes they did do a tailpipe test with the probe.
So it passed... Should be the same for you guys.

Series cats are getting more common. The front cat is for NOX only. The rear cat addresses HC/CO. This massively increases catalyst efficiency and decreases emissions compliant ("cat light up") time, which *can* also delete the need for two three way cats. EPA mandates that NOX lightup time be reduced, which the pre cat does quite well. The side benefit to Mr. T. is that the passenger isn't sitting in the baking seat like in the 93-95 dual three way cats.
You can replace with a single 3in three way universal cat, but it's not legal, nor will it pass a visual. As a rule the trucks are pretty clean so converting to a 3 way is probably not going to affect emissions output much at all. I would expect higher catalyst backpressure with inline series precat setup vs dual 3 way. On the twin turbo v6 S cars I service, there are 2 precats and 2 postcats. The same v6 motor in normally aspirated trim runs 2 traditional 3 way cats.
