Builds Abandoned 84 FJ60 gets some love, and a 4bt!

You can source a rear bench seat from an fj62 and it will have headrests. There are several threads covering the seatbelt upgrade for 3pt belts. That would be the move! Front seats, I think pt cruiser seats will drop in. Haven’t read up on that in a long time though.

There are several of us... more than several, who are running snipers. Tons of tech and tips on running and tuning those things up.

Still installing mine myself. Should have it turning over by the weekend... God willing and the creek don’t rise. Again...

You might consider the gm 4200 also. Inline 6 24v. Common and cheap and a good motor for a 60
I never thought about those engines! Boy, they are way cheap! And I see them all the time with tons of miles! Do you know if they have the same bell housing pattern as the GM v8?

They don't but we do have a thread going on about them with a bunch of info. There is a very active Youtube channel with some guys who build drag cars around that engine and with turbos...making a ton of power. Also I've found a bunch of info incluiding cad drawings for making an adapter plate. In the engines stock form it would make a great Fj60 upgrade...less costly than say a 1FZFE, closer to the original engine dimensions, more power but still good low end torque etc. I've seen stand alone EFI adapted to the engine also so that eases the Auto to manual conversion.

The only reason I'm considering engine swaps is the low availability and high cost of 2f engines in my area. I don't know if I really want to invest $10k into an engine rebuild or replacement just yet. If I can get the engine I have to run reliably, then it will stay right where it is. Otherwise, alternative options will be explored, along with searching for a known good used 2F.

you MOD that sleeping little UNICORN , with ANY Detroit GETTO GRADE parts like any GM engine transplant ................

i am being very serious here to try to help you make the right call ...

you will learn quickly that :

The classifieds section on this forum is ripe with parts! No such thing as “rare” 2F parts. Maybe difficult to come by at times, but you can catch trucks being parted and maybe buy the whole thing. Then you could pull all the interior, engine, fuel tank... etc
I’ve seen people refresh the engine for $3k before. Since you’re already a mechanic and not really climbing much of a learning curve you could pull that off with the right engine. Man, I hope you can get that thing turning! If anyone could do it a Tennessee boy could! The 2F is basically a Chevy tractor engine. In fact some of the early F type engines had interchangeable Chevy parts!

Don't forget to look for LC parts vehicles too. I picked up an 88 FJ62 for $1200 this summer. Its 106,000 miles and rusty but a good donor for an engine, harness, computer, interior pieces, spare glass, OEM clean door panels etc etc. So I can use some parts and sell some parts and offset my side costs.

I was thinking of your project while typing my reply! Funny..

Good news! The guy is closer to getting me a title for this rig through a mechanic's lein, and says he should have it in a couple of weeks!
More good news, today I pulled the fan and shroud off, and removed the spark plugs, after 2 weeks or more of soaking the cylinders in Marvel Mystery Oil, and put a breaker bar on the crank pulley, and spun the engine! It was smooth as silk for several full 360° turns! And with the plugs back in, noticeably has compression!!!

I may be able to save the 2F after all! Woo Freakin Hoo!!
Also, along the way, I found that the engine has a newish looking water pump and fan clutch...
I consider myself MUCH closer to driving my 60 now....

This is excellent news! Stoked to see this one live again! Thanks for the updates. By the way, cut that fan shroud in half. It’s a great mod for when you need to tighten a hose or swap something in the front but don’t need or want to take the entire front clip apart just to reach in there.

I brought the shroud home with me for this very purpose! Since I haven't been able to do much work to the car yet, I've spent my downtime at work reading through threads about how to go about reviving this wagon, and all the little tricks everybody has for maintaining them.

Just start with the small things. It's way too easy to try and jump in and do it all at once and get overwhelmed.

Will be following.
Ain’t that the truth. I took a two week vacation to do some work on my truck and it became a “while I’m in there fest” that lasted a month🤣

I am familiar with that, lol. I've dragged home several vehicles in this condition and worse. I usually get them going, little by little, and drive them ratty for months or years as I fix all the mechanical crap before I even mess with any aesthetic stuff. This one needs new clutch hydraulics, which stands in the way of driving it, so once I get the engine to run, that will be next.
Cleaning the interior will happen as I wait for new parts to arrive, and replacing seats will probably happen after a few months of driving with cheap Vato Zone seat covers.
Some of the great deals I've gotten on classic beaters have come along when the previous owner decided to "restore" a car, then tore the whole thing apart, and was intimidated by the task of putting it all back together. I've learned from their mistakes that for me, the best method is to tackle one part or system at a time.
I'm in no rush on this FJ. I've wanted one of these for probably 20 years, so if it takes me 5 or more to make this one nice, it's no big deal.
I also don't have much disposable cash laying around, so in many cases I'll be throwing $100 a month at it, and doing one small improvement at a time. It sucks being poor, but I've done more with less my whole life. 😎

I’d rather be poor and have my cruiser and my knowledge than wealthy with an Escalade and no understanding of how the world works. Heck, I live in my cruiser right now and have for the past year. Bury my body in this truck when I die.
