I also don’t know where they got an 18.5 gallon fuel tank in that ad. I’m fairly certain that these were +/- 16.2 gallons in 1976. I know the later models had bigger fuel tanks, but the one pictured in that ad has no rear vent windows, so it’s a 1976 or older.

Yes, I had it run below the frame (oddly enough, I think this was the stock configuration). The skid plate bolts are still easily accessible, despite how the picture looks.

Agree, below the frame was original configuration. I just ran new exhaust on my 1978 and the original was very similar to how yours is run now. I did run it above the frame and had to modify the transfer case skid to accommodate rerouting. Am thinking about wrapping as suggested by @wngrog. Looks like the shop you used did a great job on the exhaust!

The 18 1/2 gallon tank ended 9/72 with the floor/transmission cover chamge for the four speed. 1/79 tank moved under the tub and was over 22 gallons. The 73-78 tank was the smallest used in the 40 series.
 
On the way home when I got my exhaust pinched between a rock and the skid plate, the other day, I was thinking that if it got crushed bad enough, I'd have to source a hacksaw or grinder cut off wheel, just so the engine could breathe on the limp home.

If there was a long enough straight section, I wonder if it is possible to telescope a section of pipe, in a pipe that functions as a heat shield, above the skid plate?

Good question. If I wheeled hard, I’d probably put it above the skid plate. However, this rig will only see easy trails moving forward. I could easily see it getting crushed otherwise.
 
I put a heat shield on the top of the frame that sticks out between the (wrapped) pipe and the floor. Super easy but like Carson all mine could be under because I don’t smash around in the rocks

Should say the Toyota ad mentioning it has button operated 4WD would be no newer than 9/72. Probably earlier as 9/72 the 73 model started with floor shifter for 4WD. 18 1/2 is the most I have ever been able to get into my 68. With two tanks have run it completely empty a few times. The October 77 is obviously an independent road test with incorrect fuel tank capacity info. Do not know of any year with 18.9 capacity. 16 1/2 sounds right for 73-78.

Their ads did tend to embellish quite a bit in those days. I have seen some that referred to how "powerful" the engine is, and "top speeds of 90 mph".

I was driving a buddy's 1979 original CJ-5 recently and was blown away. That thing could really scoot with the AMC V8.

The 3 speed on the floor too. That’s the sketchiest rig ever. Love it.


There are Toyota ads with upside down bezels too. Hell the Land Cruiser release video 45 had the bezel wrong.

I learned to drive stick on a 3sp V8 1/2 cab bronco. That rig was fun to beat on, wish my parents kept that one.

I've never driven a "fast" 2F. Some peppy ones, but nothing I would consider quick lol. And I drive a stock 120hp 4cyl cruiser.
Oh yes. This was my 3 on the three Bronco back in the day. Should've kept this one too, but we all have "those" rigs that are part of our history.

Had an Opel GT in the early 70s I still miss. Not sure how easy it would be for me to get in and out of today. Was replaced with a 68 FJ40 in 1974. Made a lot of changes over the years but still have it.

I had a 73 Opel GT in the late 80s. Cool headlight roll over. I like my 10/72 FJ40 better. Thinking of giving it a paint job for her 50th BD next year. This is a great thread BTW. Not that scenic in coastal NC.

Doesn't appear you have a very friendly neighbor.

When I had my Opel lived in Flagstaff when winters were colder. I parked it outside. The lever on the center console offered plenty of leverage to round the headlights over. In the cold grease hardened and once the lights starting rolling would snap the three bolts at the open position. I would wedge the headlights open and fix it once it warmed up. Remember using a cigarette lighter to head the key to warm the door lock enough to unlock. Still a teenager living on my own. To be young and no responsibilities.

Only had it a couple of years and replaced it with a new Monte Carlo. Next bought a Used Toyota. That's the FJ40 I still have. My 73 FJ40 have had since 94. That one have never even started. Think I Had a Land Cruiser addiction at the time.
 
lol, that's my sign. Odd laws about trespassing in NC, maybe other places too. I was told to put that up so people will stay out of my yard. I remember the cold IA and NE mornings.
