I had another crazy idea pop up in my head this week.

I've been planning on putting a scoop on the hood of the cruiser. Something that doesn't look to ghetto. But now I'm thinking of trying a different option.

Thought about Plumbing my air cleaner into the fake vent in front of the windshield. I'd then seal off that vent with a solid plate. And then run two vents from that up to a set of extra holes I cut in the windshield channel gasket. Basically plumb the air intake into the windshield frame. Could then cut a couple holes in the windshield frame up high and cover them with a plastic meshed vent.

I could coat the inside frame with a protectant to prevent rust and I'd have to seal the frame really well around the defrost vents.

Any water that would make it in could get separated at the fake vent in front of the windshield since it has drains.

Thoughts?

If I follow your thought, I think you will have too much air restriction.

It would run like you have a dirty air filter.

Also, the smaller the filter, the faster it gets plugged. You will have to be checking and changing the air filter alot since only a small one would fit into that area.

Air filter would stay in the engine bay. I'd just port from there into the vent.

If you like to cruse the back roads with your windshield folded down, where does the air come from? You wouldn't have any "ram" type air going into the inlets as with the windshield up.

i cant imagine you will be able to seal around the defrost vents well enough to prevent whistling. As Dan said, I also think there will be too much restriction, or a compromised w/s frame structurally to get enough air flow.

I've also had a similar , but on a :pig: instead. Unlike a 40, you have an area to hide the 1/2 of the flex tube, INSIDE THE UPPER FENDER, & skirt it up in front of the windshield. I would stop the flex tube, where it turns upward, so it's still hidden & fab up a better looking metal tube to hold the snorkle top.

I've had a similar idea. 'The Air Filter Hat'. I'd run a 3" flex hose from the carb thru the firewall, under my seat, up the seatback and to a K&N style filter affixed to a ball cap with personalized logo. My thought is that the filter will always be the highest point on the vehicle. I've even thought about leaving 5 to 10 feet of extra hose coiled in the back. If the water gets too deep you just swim overhead until your vehicle starts to come back up. I haven't worked out all of the problems yet.

Anyone remember the FJ40 for sale ad someone found years ago that the seller mistook the rear heater as a snorkle? Still cracks me up.
