A stripped drive flange would behave exactly as described.

I will check tonight, unfortunately I am not home(fireworks). That info should be on the data plate in engine bay, right? The vehicle has been repainted in Japan, believe it or not. Thank you for the help.
I think you need to listen to Jon.

What happens when you put it in 4-Low?
I never tried. As soon as I got it home from the importer I parked it. After I brought it home from the Toyota dealer I just parked it again, afraid to drive it. I just start it everyday and let it run.

A drive flange, a broken birfield, any "open" in the drivetrain will exhibit these symptoms. You put your foot to the floor to get the truck to move because you're relying on the friction of the viscous coupler in the transfer case.

It is a shame that the technicians at the Toyota dealership would not check that.

I will absolutely look into that, thank you. Even the extremely hot center console, is that a symptom?
I never met an 80 Series without a hot center console. I could smoke meat in my old 91.

Thank you, that is nice to know. Is a drive flange a major fix or cost? It doesn’t matter because I will do what I have to.

I put it in reverse and it had a clunky joint.
probably worn out splines on the front hub flange and CV axles
Also, when I got back on the freeway I had to put the gas to the floor just to sluggishly accelerate.
maybe just needs the TPS adjusted. I think sluggish performance and poor shifts is common, and often fixed with basic adjustments.

When I got home I felt 5he center console and it was extremely hot.
These cruisers will heat the paasenger floor and console area on a long trip. The exhaust runs directly under this area.

Also, if the TPS adjustment isn't right, the torque converter may not lock up which reduces efficiency, and causes more heat to be produced by the auto trans.

There's almost nothing that's not known here in Mud about these cars.
Ask questions, search for related threads with key word searches and educate yourself, or spend thousands unnecessarily on the wrong repairs.

A search for clunk in reverse sounds get dozens of hits.

A search for hot floor, hot console, likewise.

As would a search for sluggish performance sluggish shift

Not really, but depends on your interpretation of major?
And on whether you have the capability to do this yourself, or will be paying to have it done?Would

Would it surprise you if the Toyota dealership missed diagnosed or missed the issue?

Many of us here have a justified lack of faith in Toyota dealerships, and mechanics in general.

You have a 30 year old car that very few Toyota based techs have any training on.

Most independent mechanics will make more from basic oil changes than dealing with a 30 year old dinosaur for a fastidious enthusiast.

Willing to spend thousands. Check
So worth it in the end tho.
And still less than one would spend on a modern financial arrangement and product.

I don’t know if this helps everyone for my trans. issues but I want to add one more thing. When I got to Columbus after driving for about 5 hours, I ran into traffic and multiple lights and at every single light I had to put the pedal to the floor to barely accelerate(a lot slower than the normal slow acceleration of the Land Cruiser). When the Cruiser is running cool the sluggish acceleration is intermittent. I don’t know if that little bit of info makes a difference or not but I wanted to share that. Thanks again everyone for the help.

X2 on what's been said, put the truck in 4-low or hit the CDL button (a JDM vehicle may have it( and try driving in a straight line.

Tell us what happens and we'll be able to help further

I had to drive home from Michigan which was about 4.5 hrs. I had to stop and get gas about an hour from home and that is when I noticed problems. I put it in reverse and it had a clunky joint. Also, when I got back on the freeway I had to put the gas to the floor just to sluggishly accelerate. When I got home I felt 5he center console and it was extremely hot.
Actually sounds pretty normal. Bad u-joint or slop in a diff would explain the clunk. The 1HD-T is sluggish if not tuned properly - nothing to do with the trans. The heat may be something to worry about.
