Been chasing an oil loss issue and I think I’ve found it. Before my VC gasket R2, oil loss/consumption issues were absent. Well, I *think* the VC gasket is leaking by the aft, left corner nearest the egr line which sucks because that’s the least accessible place. I gave all the bolts a little extra twist of torque and will monitor.

Does it look like my engine is burning too lean?

Created a separate thread about a code 31 (Volume Air Flow signal fault) I got out of nowhere and still troubleshooting that. So far the resistance checks with the VAF installed and then uninstalled are gtg. Troubleshooting continues.

Removed my compression test numbers. Turns out the gauge I rented was crap and I need to get a different set up.
I think I found my oil and Code 24/31 issues. I’m thinking the valve cover baffles are obstructed and making the oil go through the vent tube and into my throttle body and intake tube.

Maybe the oil is also causing the codes 24/31?

Those plugs do give the appearance of running a bit lean. I assume, from info you posted earlier, that none of the codes nor the oil consumption and lean looking plugs were present prior to all the baseline maintenance you performed?

That’s correct Steve. I must’ve done something during the baseline.
I bought a new valve cover and all consumables so I’m going to do it again.

Go get ‘em.

Geez, been a while since I posted. Not much in terms of tech or work being done to the cruiser. My second vehicle is on loan to another family in need and so the cruiser maintenance has to wait. They leave the island this Thursday so I have no excuses after that. Been amassing parts for the last month or so. I really want to dig into her (sts).

Thoughts about getting these powder coated black? Glossy or flat or keep stock?

Getting the heat shields powder coated will reduce efficacy and likely cook off. Some of the ceramic coatings (same as used on headers) would work better, but they're spendy compared to powder coat.

Thanks for the heads up!

I’m excited by your parts amassing…which makes me excited to amass my own project pile. Glad you’re doing well! Skip the powder coating and engine dress up!

Thanks dude, I think I will skip the powder and just keep it stock like my valve cover. I’ll look into the ceramic coating but I don’t have money burning holes in my pockets ;)

Let’s be honest, the stock engine looks great! Bragging rights on the 80 series have little to do with what’s under the hood (other than typical LC over engineered robustness), but rather the revolve around you found one, you brought it to life back from neglect, and it’s just so much more iconic than any JK will ever be….

not that you were pursuing beautification of your engine…I’m assuming that you were trying to increase the lifespan of that thin heat shield.😎

Thanks for posting. It was nice browsing your thread. I have fond memories of my own baseline efforts. FYI, for over a decade after the initial baseline was done, I did almost nothing but change oil, lube driveshafts/u-joints, and drive. Now after 14 years I have some work to do again, but the truck will pay back your hard work with years of silent reliability.

All the best
Brad

Thanks Brad, I appreciate the positive words, they mean a lot especially in this crazy world we live in today.
It's definitely been a learning experience and I have to give props to this forum, especially dudes like BILT4ME, Baldilocks, PNWtreeOctopus, etc. I'm sure I'm leaving people out but these guys take pics of their rig for me, take my texts, PMs, etc. I bother the crap out of them! Sounds like you have some fun up ahead too. Looking forward to your progress if/when you post.

Dang! A shiny new oem valve cover? That's fancy. I was going to chime in regarding cerakote instead of powder as well. Unless there a local Hawaii shop, I think it could be pricey.

Yes, shiny and new...and it is made differently from my original valve cover. Check out the pic:

I called around to some shops today but no one answered. Kinda standard for HI. Do you guys in the CONUS take your items to get cerakoted from gun shops? I haven't been able to find an automotive shop that does that here yet but I haven't had much time to search.

I can't answer for the other guys, but yes, I would start with the shops that cater to the gun crowd. The heat shields shouldn't pose much challenge for a decent coating shop.
Interesting revisions to the valve cover. Did it ship with new spark plug tube seals installed?

Yes, new spark plug seals came with it but I bought 6 anyway just in case. I guess 6 extra will sit on the shelf until 100K more miles

Pell just an FYI I also have kids (8 & 12) so this hardly qualifies as bugging me....if you want to be a contender you're gonna up your game!
