I just picked up an older 8274 Warn Winch with a horseshoe grill guard, mount and fairlead. Cost was $450. Works great but would like to do some maintenance to it since it has been sitting awhile. Any recomendations? This is for my 76 FJ40. Also did I do Ok on the purchase price? Just looking for piece of mind that I didn't get taken.

great price if it works Warn sell any and all replacement parts for it

Warn has good parts diagrams... pull it apart, clean the guts and use their suggested grease to relube it... it'll last forever! Disconnect and clean all of the electricals (when NOT connected to a battery of course) too...

They are good winches for sure. I just rebuilt a 8274 that I bought and ended up replacing a bunch of parts due to misuse by the PO and also being that it is a 36 year old winch w/ probably zero preventitive mainataince. It would probably be a good idea to crack the lower and upper halves and check the gear oil. When i started mine apart, mine had no oil in it but plenty of water.
