Memory foam is the way to go. We had a 3” topper for our bed that the wife vetoed after a year. I cut it up for my camp mattress and then the dog got his s***ty foam replaced as well. It doesn’t pack well but sure is comfy.

This is the way I’m leaning. I really don’t need it to be compact. It’s for car camping and not hiking anyway. It will only be stored away at home when not in use.

A quote from mud from long ago, "anything you don't want to get hit in the head with should be bolted down" or something like that, wise words
Or, try this: head-on hit, all that weight introduces the steering wheel to the seat back, with the driver in between. No flip required. Bolt it down, and bolt an L- plate in front of and under it.

I like the memory foam idea. I’m looking for a solution for this myself. Nothing like a few creature comforts on the trail.
Add another vote for the queen size memory foam mattress, after a few camping trips with my wife i can honesty say our inflatable queen size air mattress SUCKED! That's the reason why we are changing over to a fold up 6 inch thick memory foam mattress. Below is a link to the mattress we are buying.

This wasn't planned either and I'd like to think the wife is a safe driver. She said coffee mugs and ski boots became flying projectiles... coffee mug hit passenger in the head. ski boots hit the window inside hard enough that it scraped up the window tint on the inside. Thankfully the winter kit, tool kit, etc... were secured inside my drawer system. It's not hard to secure the drawers and is a lesson better learned the easy way. Rant off.

Nice looking platform, especially the side opening compartments accessible from the rear doors.

It is such a nice sleeping platform to not bolt down. Plenty of locations. I used every bolt location available to secure the base. I have flip a vehicle before and remember my radio coming out of the dash and floating as I rolled like it was in space.

DaFuq! Made a believer of me!!!

No. It's not tied down or secured in any way. It's weight holds it in place
Very simple. When you unbolt the seat mounts from the floor just run a bot from inside the platform right down into the existing bolt hole. Just use a big fender washer. Should take just a few min to put 4 bolts in.

We are lucky how easy it is. With the seats and hardware removed the floors on these trucks ar perfectly flat and covered in massive bolt holes all over the place.

My '91 has tie down points that pop through the carpet just behind the front seats and the back. Aren't these also on the FZJ80?

The tricks I used to find where to drill was to drill from under the truck to mark the holes. And the spots you can’t see from underneath is to put the bolts in the holes and then whack the platform with a mallet and it should indent the bottom of the wood to show where to drill.

Nice attention to detail. I will bolt mine down to the seat hooks. ;)

Here is a sleeping platform/ storage system for the back of an 80 Series Land Cruiser. I had a basic design drawn up, which was inspired by previous MUD builds, and a local cabinet guy ("Thomas") brought it to life. Because I did not do the fabricating I do not have much detailed knowledge of the build process or components. However, I thought it might be helpful or inspiring to others just to see it. The platform is not mounted to the vehicle. Total dimensions are 72"L x 56"W x 9.25"H. Drawers are 34" deep by 16" wide.

How are you liking your drawer system after a few years??

Is he making more?

I want a very simple system just like this one!

How did the folding memory foam mattress work out? Do you still use it?
