Hi everyone,
So recently I decided I had enough of my ford territory and swapped it for this beast. Normally a patrol person but this rig was too tempting. Now I'm an 80 series driver and loving it!
Just had a few questions for the more knowledgable, what sort of fuel consumption are people getting out of their 80 series, mines the 4.2L TD auto.
My dash lights keep turning themselves off, I found the dimmer switch was disconnecting itself. Just can't get it to stay connected for longer then a week? Any hacks on this.
And brakes, I'm having this issue with occasionally the brakes don't work. The pedal seizes up, can't be pushed in, then when it gives the abs kicks in and turns the car hard in the opposite direction your going. Which really isn't ideal, bled the brake lines to make sure it wasn't anything silly like an air bubble but not sure where to go from here with it.
Thanks :)

Nice rig! My diesel auto gets between 18 and 19 mpg under normal commute conditions. For me, that means driving at between 80 and 90 mph on the freeway everyday. If I kept it down to 65mph, I think I would be over 20 mpg.

Brakes sound like some caliper issues

Brakes were shot when I picked my 80 up in 2015. Replaced seized up calipers, rotors and pads. Bled it and the brakes seemed gtg. Then I hit an off ramp on the interstate and my brakes locked up(themselves). Took me a while to figure out that just the fronts were engaging(on their own). Replaced the master cylinder and it solved the issue. Pedal feel wasn't consistent before the MC was swapped out and it would occasionally fall when it was being held down(the brake pedal). This was just one of quite a few issues that needed attention when I picked up my ride with 240k on the odometer.

Heathens! The lot of you, where are your manners!? Welcome to Mud @Lainey

I can't attest to the diesel fuel consumption but know it is substantially better than any of the petrol models. As for the brake pedal getting hard like that I would inspect the check valve on the brake booster for proper function and ensure that the vacuum hose for the booster is in good working order. Go from there.

Wellcome to IH8MUD Lainey! You will soon see (discover?) that the best fuel consumption is done at about 1800 RPM in O/D (about 80 kmh) there it will do about 500 kms with half a tank (main if you have sub)

Thanks everyone for the replies, the brakes I ended up sending it into a brake shop because I found everything on each corner appeared normal and when plugged into a computer it kept saying error codes were coming from the abs pump. So after Easter further inspections will be done on these codes a probably a new pump will go in and see if that fixes the problem, fingers crossed :)

I am thinking brake booster. If the booster is not working then you have extremely hard pedal with very little effective braking. Then when it starts working if you are applying a LOT of force on the pedal it would be like SLAMMING your foot on the brakes. this would activate the ABS. I have seen brake boosters fail where they are intermittent like this.

I know it has ben many months but I thought I'd fill you in on the whole brakes situation, turns out it was something pretty silly that was causing the issues. Seals had gone on the front swivel hubs and bearings and mud/dirt was getting on the abs sensor and throwing it off that's why it would happen so randomly to me. Anyways all that fixed up after a few hours of swearing and a whole lot of grease (can't say replacing them is my favourite job) and she's good to go and haven't had an issue since. Talk about feel like a fool when I found out that was the cause.

Congrats on finding the fix and your first knuckle rebuild on the 80 series. We look forward to your future posts.

80 to 90 MPH you get arrested in this part of town for doing that

When I lived in Colorado, it would too. On I93, heading towards Boston at 5:30am it lets me travel in the middle lane without getting honked at and flipped off by all of these New Englanders! This morning, some guy tail gating and flashing lights at the one lane over from me. I looked at my speedometer and it indicated 75 mph. With 315s I'd guess that's somewhere approaching 85 mph... crazy place.
