I just found out that the non-US hood prop rod is still available, shipped from UAE on Amayama. Had I known I could get a genuine 80-series rod so cheaply, I wouldn't have spend time making my own! Here are the parts for a complete conversion to a manual prop rod:

90480-15002 Grommet $1.03
53452-90351 Clip $2.13
53451-60010 Connecting arm (prop rod) $12.76

Shipping costs more than the parts. $20.71 for me, netting $36.63 for everything. They might offer some lower costs shipping options, particularly if you order from Japan and can wait for SAL shipment, but I'm not sure if the prop rod is short enough to qualify for small parcel shipment.

With larger tyres, bar work on the front etc - reaching up/over to get the hood in place to slip the rod in.... hmm, aftermarket gas struts - much easier :)

cheers,
george.

^^^ +1

To me, if I gotta shell out $50 every ~15 yrs, those struts are money well spent.

Prop rods are for old VW's.

All fun, until you're parked in that canyon, a gust of wind comes from behind and blows the hood down on you! My struts are fine, also have the prop rod, much better than head lumps!

And when a good wind comes up from behind that rig, you'll wish you had a proprod in addition to fresh struts. BTDT. IM ONLY 5' 9", old, and crippled up, my 80 is on 37's, and I have the classic ARB bumper. I have no problem using a proprod.

^ good for you :) I have the old rod scheme on my patrol & jeep. Yeah, they work fine, but the gas struts are easier. I guess we should have rods for the rear glass tailgate too then...

New gas struts would need a very strong wind to make the hood move. I've not see the hood want to move with functional gas struts.

cheers,
george.

You know that you can pull one from 60 or 62 and that will work, grab the rod , oring, and plastic holder for the rod works perfect, and will prob cost ya 5 bucks

Struts are nice for things that get opened often. I can anticipate lift-gate strut failure, since I have to start helping it up with my free hand as I'm dropping groceries in the back. I have no interest in struts for a hood. I want to open my hood rarely, and I never want my hood to sag when I need it open.

I made one from a rod I bought at Ace Hardware for about $4.80. It was a time sink, and it would be a time sink to locate a local FJ60/62. Plus, they're not identical.

Works fine in my 80, but by all means go spend 50 bucks just trying to save ya some money

By all means, post non-contributing, off-topic, pointless, snide comments in a thread about hood support rods.

Why be salty buddy?

You got your way, we all got ours.

And a few of us have been doing 'our way' for a couple days more than you, right?
--Whatever---

FYI: The 60 one is quite as long as you need (about 1.5" too short); but useful. Don't know if the 80 version is longer or not

I'm happy to confirm that the prop rod does, in fact, fit a US market 80:

Being very innovative cheap by nature I have developed a devise to increase my safety under the hood.

THAT's a solution! - no friggin prop rod that falls & drops the hood latch on my C2 vertebrae.

I'm just used to prop rods that WHEN they fell, had no shocks, and they would fall since your right elbow just has to barely brush it & wham!!!

Off you go to get 2 High Life tallboys, 1 to start sucking on, the other to ice the back of your head/neck. And then drink it too, along with a vicodin from your last dentist visit.
