Well, I am on work assignment for the next few years in Indonesia and I thought I would get some things done to my 95 LC so its ready when i return. Some maint., repairs and upgrades. So, to start I just asked them to run diag on everything and they notice some smoke coming from the exhaust. Turns out I have (2) of the (6) pistons with zero compression (not sure if head gasket, valcves, etc.). They believe it will take an engine swap and they are not capable of doing that. I have no idea if this sounds right or not, or where to start. If I were to swap, thoughts on engines that fit and are sole=id performers. 90% highway use, the rest will be some light off road except for the occasion MOAB trip...not sure that helps. Any insights to get me started would be greatly appreciated.

Was this running and driving?

Are the 2 cylinders with no compression next to each other? If so, then likely just a head gasket. If not then possibly valve related. Has the shop performed a leakdown test?
Either way it is unlikely that the bottom end is so bad that an engine swap is required. New head gasket and a refreshed head might be all that is required. Problem. Is the costs can build quick and an engine swap might start to be comparable.

Sounds like a shop is pulling your leg because they know you're going to be gone.

If you drove it there, drive it away and never go back.

Find a new shop, especially if you drove your truck there.

For a start, need more details about the smoke, how much, what colour, what condition it's visible in etc.

Second, what are the actual compression numbers?

No experience myself with them, but FWIW this LC shop in the Houston area has some good reviews:

Thanks. He said #5 and #6 cyl.

they said they don’t have the ability to fix it themselves. I intended to get other work done on the vehicle (new seats, upgrade lights, new suspension, etc.) and the noticed smoke coming out of the exhaust so they ran compression test for me. They have nothing to gain by lying.

They said “little to none” on cyl 5&6, but I can get the report. Just haven’t emailed it yet.

The issue is, they don't know what they're doing.

A HG failure between two cylinders that's not producing lots of white smoke is very rare.

There is a proper procedure for doing a compression test, both dry and wet, and if not followed correctly will give bad results and people make life altering decisions based on those results.

It's not about lying. It's about being incompetent. They can't do HG replacement there, maybe they shouldn't be doing testing for it.

It's your truck, you do what you want.

If you drove it in there I doubt there is "little to none" compression in 2 cylinders.

Consider that they may be trying to get you to abandon it to them if they know any about your story of going overseas for a few years. I wouldn't trust that diagnosis...

Same response here.

What you've been told, or posted here doesn't gel!

2 cylinders with little to no compression, the engine would be hard to start, and would be running like an old tractor. Very rough, and very low on power. You would not be unaware of the shaking, stumbling engine rpm, and would not be unaware of lack of power.

If they are correct that two adjacent cylinders are low on compression, chances are a had gasket replacement will fix it.

If they leapt straight from "new seats, new lights, etc" to "it needs an engine swap" seems disingenuous.

Did they at least give you a run down on your options?

Maybe they don't want to do that type of work?
If they aren't willing to take on a head gasket swap, why?
The answer to this could tell you whether they are people you want doing an engine swap for you.

This is what I was thinking !
IMO no way you driving around with two dead cinders and not noticing.

Yeah Ive been Indonesia and a family member has been driving once a month for me. Never had issues.

Gotcha, they admitted they aren’t comfortable with it. They mainly do mods and restoration…they recommended try elsewhere. Which I plan to do. Get another opinion.

Where is the truck located?

You don't give a location.
Have you looked in the clubhouse section for local Land Cruiser clubs in your area? They would be a good resource to find a competent shop.
