Since i sold my FJ40 i built in 2015, i've had the itch on and off to get a 79-83 pickup.
Friend in college, who got me into off-roading had one. It's what i ideally wanted prior to me getting my FJ40, can't remember why i changed my mind. Enjoyed my FJ40, just got a bit burnt out on the constant project i had created and I was moving where it couldn't be used as intended as easily anymore.

Anywho, the search is slowly starting to pick back up to track down a pickup.

Ideal combination for me is:
White w/ Stripes
Long Bed
22R
5 speed (Has me looking at the latter end of the years to get)
AC
Power steering (Can add this easily enough if need be)

As i've been searching, i'll see a few sell for between $10-12k, and then out of no where one randomly for $5k+ more. Only noticable difference is maybe a more ideal paint color, wheel/tire set, etc.

Craigslist generally will have a few decent stock trucks that need new paint, decent interior work, overall cleaning for $5k give or take a $1k. Can easily see me getting $5k+ getting it up into the condition i would want it and quickly blowing thru that for some unexpected rust issues. Not sure i want this type of project either. Between my FJ40 and a race car project right afterwards, i've lost my desire to do an in-depth project. Looking for something someone else put their time and money into.

What can one realistically expect to pay for a clean example (nice paint, nice interior, overall good shape, no rust, etc)? I was hovering around a $10k budget last year, think i can swallow around $12k for the right truck. Is that realistic? The one i'm eyeing now i suspect will end up $15k+, plus travel.
Outside of Ebay, Mud, Craigslist, FB is there any other good places to search?

I've seen the same thing over here in the South East - a huge range. The mileage seems to be the big variable. Well, that and rust. Under 200,000 miles and in great shape - $10-12k. Under 100,000 miles - closer to $20,000. Built like your 40... $40k ;-)

I'm not finding too many that really fall into my criteria either which makes it hard. I'm impatient and like hard(er) to find things

That's partly why I'm wanting to buy close to already done vs build. What i sold it for would about get a truck into my price range

@pappy... That's solid little truck. The price seems fair. I hope he gets that for it... it'll help me justify dumping cash into mine!

Nice truck, but I hate it when sellers claim the mileage based on the restoration... or repaint in this case. The truck has 116,000 miles, not 16,000. Strange - 'cause 116,000 is damn low for 38-yr-old truck. I'd have just listed that number...

... especially since "restored" is a stretch:

Yes, there are many things wrong with that truck, that don't make it worth anywhere near that price. That is definitely not "restored".

Not sure how well it will run with that crankcase vent tube missing on the valve cover.

They are out there... You just need to be patient. It’s a hard thing to put a real world value on trucks this old as they are “worth” whatever someone is willing to pay. It’s kind of a “how long is a piece of string” type deal. Good luck in your search!

@LeRoy Cordova has a nice 1983 that he was trying to sell a while back. I know it's probably not your preferred color, but it is a sharp truck.

Here's a bargain for ya...

Ran across that yesterday, looked nice until i saw the below pics in the ad. Too expensive regardless.
Unfortunate someone spent money to make it look great on the outside and leave it untouched beneath.

I had messaged him a while back, a little more than we want to spend at his asking price where my offer would be insulting.
Looks nice and definitely comforting seeing documentation of no rust during the repaint.

Currently the exact opposite of my '84 project:

Patience is the key. I looked for a long time and found a 1981 with just under 200k here on this site a couple of years ago for just over 5k. Very good condition, very little rust, two owners, lots of records. PS, A/C, 5 speed. Had to have it shipped from Colorado.

Here's one that sold yesterday on BAT.

That’s not a bad deal for the beauty on BAT. If they’re all gone through, ie rebuilt axles, re-sealed etc, like that one or Leroys, $15,000 isn’t too bad a deal. You can find a bargain now and then, but these trucks are simple, and reliable. Far more so than anything new. If you can deal with the “lack of amenities”, they are a great truck.

Bring a Trailer has them turn up from time to time.
