Been looking for an FJ the last few months. It's for sure a rust bucket. Eventually would like to do an aluminum tub. But it's gonna have to stay as is for the winter. Any helpful advice I can do to get her looking a little better and running smoothly would be very helpful. Runs great now. But as a first time buyer what kind of maintenance would you suggest off the bat?

Cool, Hawaii dreaming...................

Sorry, I only subscribe to Hawaii threads from AlohaJen.

Aloha,
I would ensure the brakes work all around first. Also, if it is a manual and with the heat and humidity in the summer out there, I would check for leaks at your clutch slave cylinder and and at the Brake and Clutch master cylinder. If it was sitting for a while the seals become oblong and tend to leak. Happen to me when I kept mine in storage while underway. Good Luck and Enjoy it with the top off out there, I had a blast when I had it off in Hono.

Hawaii's climate is horrible on steel - I would immediately clean out the frame, assess the rust, and heavily oil/grease the inside of the frame, especially ahead and behind the rear wheels. A new tub won't matter much if the truck is snapping in half.

Well when I brought it home my wife wasn't too stoked, I picked the whole rig up for $1k and the doors alone are almost worth that much. Took her for her first ride and now she is starting to love it. Here are some shots from the beach last night out on the westside of Kauai.

It took me a long time to find mine when I was there, too. I ended up losing the lower end on the F motor coming over the H3 toward town and coasted all the way into Salt Lake. Nearly all of the ones I came across looked like yours. In the islands, I would definitely start saving for an aqualu tub. Congrats on getting a running rig, though!!

Like Mike said drive it a lot-habe not been able to drive mine enough! BTW great pics;)
