Hijack for a minute. I just installed my gr starter but it's not engaging. Sounds like it wants to go but it seems like the gears are out of sinc? Ideas?

I am wondering if there is a different number for the starter that is for an automatic vs stick shift.

FWIW: Here is a start, it is the Toyota electronic parts catalog. Near the top, you will see a button called "market". Click it, and follow the promts to what ever Land Cruiser you have. It is where I find all my part numbers.

I'm wondering if I'm missing something. This is on a chassis. So no wiring just grounded and hitting it with 12 volts from a fresh battery. Everything is new. Is there another wire I may need to get it to turn over besides ground and 12v?

There should be a wire from the ignition switch.

Yes! Just saw that. Didn't think it was required for the starter to spin but yes it is. Now it's spinning but not engaging. .. grrrr

I think what he means is, if you want a good reman(not new) that was remanned in Japan, then a new REMAN from Toyota is your best bet.

I have always used Toyota reman starters, all my rigs have GR units in them. Did have to replace one reman on moms' 97, it only last 60K

i'm confused--do I buy denso or not? If I buy new-it's Chinese. If I buy reman-it's Chinese remanned in Japan-so the difference is???

Got it, Thank you

UP-DATE: Having some time to wrench on my rig, I installed an (internally ballasted?) Toyota #90919-02015 coil this weekend. My 40 didn't care for it, and didn't run very well. Hence, I have taken that diagram out of the mix at this time. I reinstalled my original coil/igniter pack, unhooked all the igniter wires and reattached the TH Dizzy as per this diagram.

I've been looking at this thread with great interest as my current starter doesn't work well in the cold - fails to fully engage. Anyway I picked up a GR starter and am preparing for the install. The discussion and wiring details have been very helpful. But I am having a difficult time determining which wire that is currently attached to my old starter ('78 FJ40) is the correct one to cap and which one to use. Per my situation and the wiring diagrams they are both black with white strip. One is like a #14 wire and one looks like a #10 or #12. I don't want to tear into the harness too much but it appears that the heavier wire goes to the coil - haven't check continuity of the wires I've identified but plan to.

Just wonder if anyone has an easy way to ID the correct wire?

Thx in advance for the help - Bill

Bill,
I used the heavier gauge BW wire and connected it to the GR and works fine. See pics of my install here post #24 https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/ge...fj40-fj60-new-first-impressions.834189/page-2

^^^^...I'll second what Mike said above...^^^^

The wiring diagram shows one wire (the one from the ignition switch-that you need) as WB and the other wire as BW.
The safest thing to do is use a test light while the wires are disconnected from the starter.
If you turn the key to "start" then one wire (the one that you need) will be energized and will light up with the test light.
The other one will not.
Or...you can flip a coin and try one of the wires. The right one will work. The wrong one won't.

Funny you mentioned that about the wires and a test light. The coil wire to my starter actually has a connector about 3" from the starter, and it changes wire color. If you look at my/Toyota's wiring diagram for a '77, the coil wire to the starter comes off the coil as white, then changes to black/white stripe at the starter....maybe I'm reading that wrong? :meh:

Here, have a look at what mine looks like...not sure why it is like this though.

The BW wire that connects to the GR has a female spade connector and connects to the GR male spade, as shown on GA's pic above.

I didn't like the old photo I posted......here is one I just took of my starter's electrical connections with the updated battery cable.

Now, I'm sure that the Toyota diagram of the starter wire off the coil is white and changes to black/white stripe. This happens near the coil, the white wire is only about 3" long and has a black covering over it from the coil to the green connector, seen here:

Note, once it changes to the black/white stripe wire, it goes into the harness. However, it doesn't explain why I have that other connector near the starter. I'm guessing that extension isn't OEM, and was probably done at a later date?
