Hijack for a minute. I just installed my gr starter but it's not engaging. Sounds like it wants to go but it seems like the gears are out of sinc? Ideas?

I am wondering if there is a different number for the starter that is for an automatic vs stick shift.
It's not a GRIt does not appear to be a gear reduction starter.
There is another parts listing on ToyoDIY-all factory stuff.FWIW: Here is a start, it is the Toyota electronic parts catalog. Near the top, you will see a button called "market". Click it, and follow the promts to what ever Land Cruiser you have. It is where I find all my part numbers.
I'm wondering if I'm missing something. This is on a chassis. So no wiring just grounded and hitting it with 12 volts from a fresh battery. Everything is new. Is there another wire I may need to get it to turn over besides ground and 12v?
Yes! Just saw that. Didn't think it was required for the starter to spin but yes it is. Now it's spinning but not engaging. .. grrrrThere should be a wire from the ignition switch.

i'm confused--do I buy denso or not? If I buy new-it's Chinese. If I buy reman-it's Chinese remanned in Japan-so the difference is???
I've been looking at this thread with great interest as my current starter doesn't work well in the cold - fails to fully engage. Anyway I picked up a GR starter and am preparing for the install. The discussion and wiring details have been very helpful. But I am having a difficult time determining which wire that is currently attached to my old starter ('78 FJ40) is the correct one to cap and which one to use. Per my situation and the wiring diagrams they are both black with white strip. One is like a #14 wire and one looks like a #10 or #12. I don't want to tear into the harness too much but it appears that the heavier wire goes to the coil - haven't check continuity of the wires I've identified but plan to.
Just wonder if anyone has an easy way to ID the correct wire?
Thx in advance for the help - Bill
^^^^...I'll second what Mike said above...^^^^I've been looking at this thread with great interest as my current starter doesn't work well in the cold - fails to fully engage. The wiring diagram shows one wire (the one from the ignition switch-that you need) as WB and the other wire as BW.
The safest thing to do is use a test light while the wires are disconnected from the starter.
If you turn the key to "start" then one wire (the one that you need) will be energized and will light up with the test light.
The other one will not.
Or...you can flip a coin and try one of the wires. The right one will work. The wrong one won't.
