After searching for diagrams, I couldn't find what I was looking for, so I made one. Anyone wanting to install a Trollhole Dizzy and/or a Gear Reduction Starter in their '77 FJ40, here is a wiring diagram.

Here is a simpler diagram using an updated Toyota Coil 90919-02015. Installed the 90919-02015 and my 40 didn't care much for it...I'm taking that diagram off at this time, as I'm not sure what the issue was. I just reinstalled the original coil/igniter, and unhooked the igniter as seen in the above diagram.


NOTE: I'm not a Electrical Engineer for Toyota, so if this is incorrect, let me know and I'll update this sketch accordingly.

Thanks for posting; saved to disk. Going to upgrade to a gear-reduction starter some day.
 
Does it turn the motor over much faster? I was toying with doing this mod...
 
This will work but it can be even simpler. Replace the coil with a 12v coil, (sometimes called a coil with internal resistor) remove the external ballast resistor (and the external ignitor). BY wire from the ignition switch goes to the coil positive (and the trollhole dizzy red wire). Simple and reliable.

Is there a 12V Toyota OEM coil that would work? This would eliminate the ballast resistor & igniter, correct? If so, let me know and I'll note that on the diagram.
 
^^^ Just did the same in my '75 , plus the starter is much easier to install and readilly available.
 
Great thing about the gear reduction is the ability to start the cruiser in gear. Great for when you are in a butt pucker situation and cant clutch brake and gas all at the same time while releasing the parking brake. Also if your vehicle is dead it will actually move your vehicle. Have moved quite a few dead cruisers around at the shop with just the starter. Just don't over heat the starter.
 
What does my '82 FJ40 have, as far as a starter. It cranks real slow, so I am thinking I can pull the one from the 62 parts car I have and install it in mine.
If I can, do I wire it the same as this shows?

Coin - For an US spec '82 FJ40, the starter would be OEM part number 28100-60042 or possibly 28100-60070. It is possible you have a gear reduction starter. If so, there would be no change to your wiring set up. Let's see a photo of the current wiring on your starter to get an accurate account of what you have.

What's the benefit of upgrading to a Trollhole dizzy?
 
The GR starters from a discount dealer, like BENO, C. Dan, etc., are actually very resonably priced for an OE-spec rebuild. $30 core charge, though.

I put a GR in my early '74 and it's great, though I miss the truck-starting-whirr-sound it made with the large starter.

I followed this thread LINK an added a relay for a proper wiring set up.

Spike - It is that thread that prompted me to draw a diagram. I couldn't figure out Mr. Toad's post #64 from that link, back in 12/2009. I couldn't follow along his written directions, and I wish there was a schematic wiring of that switch. So I kept searching. Then I happened across this from Mr. Jim C. on the thread, see post #2 from 5/2014. It was a much simpler approach.

Mr. Toad adds a switch & Jim C. caps off the coil wire to the starter...............Are these both right or does one supersede the other? Hence this thread.

If adding the switch is correct, send me a wiring diagram and I'll update my original post........

85 - +12 volt in from..."brought up from big BW on small BW".....That is the statement I don't understand.
30 - comes in from 85
86 - goes to ground
87 - goes to (+) of coil terminal

What connects to the starter?

Don't need to do any relay for my dizzy. Got to think simple.
 
For a general spec internally regulated coil, OEM part use: 90919-02015. Comes with bracket about $60-70, or get a generic coil at the parts store.

If you want to be really clever, I also put in a gear reduction starter years ago, when installing a trollhole distributor, I used the now un-used extra starter wire for the negative wire to the distributor. Had to add a spade or bullet as I recall to the dist. wire and used the original dist. wire for the positive wire. Nice and clean install, no extra wires, keeps it all wrapped in the harness unless you have doubts about the condition of the stock wires. They already have the nice ring connectors on them next to the coil, and the extra starter wire is simply a jumper from the starter back to the coil to provide 12V, so that is all the further it goes.

MoCo - Per your set up, similar to mine, the diagram I've provided is acceptable. Did you installed the 90919-02015 coil?....I understand there are probably other ways to wire the GR Starter up-grade, but this configuration is simple. Being you installed your GR Starter years ago, wired as I have shown, have you had any electrical issues pertaining to this up-grade?
