I just installed one. Works great! I did have an issue getting it seated all the way in on the first try. Sounds totally different. More like a whir.

If you buy one of these starters for your older truck, I sell the matching female single pin connector for the male connector on the starter.

My only question is why does the 40 have two different size bolts (upper 18mm, lower 19mm) for the starter? Is this an isolated characteristic to mine only or is typical for all?

Electrical Connections

Next I'll be installing new cables and making the final electrical connections

Yet another issue with the lower 19mm bolt for the GRS, the bolt would not fit through the ground loop hole, needless to say it had to be drilled as well.

Final Evaluation and Recommendations

The initial start after the GRS install was awesome the 2F started effortlessly within the first revolution without any hesitation what so ever, it was music to my ears, it sounded so good that I re-started the engine at least a dozen times, just to make sure it was running properly.:bounce:

I had several issues during the install with the 19mm bolt, however, I truly believe that my original 19mm bolt was an aftermarket re-tap fix due to a stripped bolt/hole, perhaps, problems that the PO encountered, and believe that explains the bolting issues that I had during the install.

Despite all the issues the GRS is working flawlessly and I would not hesitate to recommend this unit from AMAZON.

The complete install I'd say was a single:banana: and anyone can do this.

Keep trucking!!

You kind of have the terminology wrong. It isn't an 18 or 19mm bolt. Bolts are not measured by head size.

In stock form it's a 12mm bolt with I believe a 17mm head. Yours must have been previously stripped, tapped and a larger bolt installed. Does the original started have signs that the hole in the ear was tampered with in the past?

Probably a dumb question from a non mechanic, but a while back I asked a question about having to pump my gas pedal a bunch of times after my 77 sat for several days. As I understood it, pumping the pedal was not the issue cranking the starter thus activating the fuel pump was getting me the fuel to start. So will this gear reduction starter be of any benifit in my situation. I have a good starter I installed after 2f rebuild, not many starts, but if this is an upgrade that effects my fuel issue it may be worth it.

The simple answer is "no". Although the starter motor itself is higher speed, it is geared down to provide the same (or sometimes less) speed at the flywheel but with more torque. This will not give you more or quicker fuel delivery.

It sounds like you have more of a fuel problem... Either your fuel pump is not pumping enough pressure (psi) or your fuel filter needs replacing or gas is leaking out of your carb (I'd bet on this one).

After it sits for a few days, BEFORE TRYING TO START IT, check the fuel level in the sight glass on your carb... It's probably empty...

The GRS provides more torque, allowing a properly tuned engine/carb to start faster... But, if you don't have fuel in your sight glass, your pump has to 'catch up'.

HTH

I bought mine used, from Georg (@orangefj45) - it's off an FJ60 and I love it!! Some guys would rather hear the old one, as it cranks, but I like how quickly it turns over and how quickly 44 starts.

My old starter still worked and I carry it as a spare.... Might have been easier to carry the GRS as a spare... :hmm: As @mags said.

Easy installation!! IIRC two wires - third existent wire not needed... Unless I return to the enormous OEM starter.
I did the same thing--GR from Georg. No problems at all-- still running great after ~ 2 yrs

Used to have very similar probs with my 77. It has a weber on it--no heat shield . I had to pump/many times to get it to fire just after driving a short distance(10 miles)--fast forward--blew a head gasket, had to replace the head due to severe cracking(non-related to the fuel issue)
While I had the head replacement coming, decided to install headers--after all the parts are put in --no more hard starts, and no more pumping the accel. Attribute this to the cooler temps under the hood(due to the headers) no more carb float bowl boiling. If the rig sits for 4 days or so--yea, you gotta give it a shot, but not more than about 2

Please correct me if I am wrong, but the starter is chinese made not Denso. I know it has a sticker on the box that refers to denso but that is all, correct??

There was no indication on the box that it was Chinese made.

A few questions/comments.

- starter was starting to die & it finally puked on my 73 FJ40 this morning
- called NAPA & they had one in stock for $104 (remanned in Mexico) (Hawaii - we don't have a lot of options/the Amazon version above would charge for shipping)
- install was straight forward & went in well
- is there a universal name for the female single pin connector, mine only had a female spade & I would like to find locally if I can
- the start now is AMAZING
- does anyone else notice a faint whine from theirs? It is not very loud (can only hear at idle with head under hood and doesn't necessarily sound bad, but I've never had this type of starter so didn't know if it was common or I should be concerned. Again, everything went together well & it starts like a champ.

78 if you don't mind me asking what is the grounding strap on your starter connected to. I just pulled my old one and the grounding strap was a frayed mess of copper wire that wasn't connected to anything at all but the starter. In other words I don't believe it was grounded before hand. Thanks.

The starter body is grounded to the passenger side frame rail, forward of the two brake line elbows. The bolt is the back most bolt on the splash guard under the battery.

turns out not getting a gear reduction starter is getting hard. i was looking for a direct drive and almost couldn't not find one. took me a while but i found one. i wanted the direct drive.

As Danny mentioned above the neg strap connects to the frame rail. Make sure you clean the rail down to bare metal prior to installing and bolting down the neg cable.

You are better off getting the gear reduction starter, don't even bother with the direct drive ones, as they are not worth it.

too late it'll get put on when i'm removing the power steering conversion.
