Hi all.

What the best way to get a 5 speed gearbox into my '76 FJ40?
I understand there are some tailshaft things to do, but I am not very clear on the whole proceedure.

Any help?

Do a search for H55 and NV4500. The H55 is the toyota 5 spd and would be matched with a split transfer case, the NV4500 could be done several ways, but niether is cheap or drop in.

Good luck

I put a 5 gear h55f on my 1972 FJ 40; I'm sorry but I don't know the word...in italian we call the "bell" (campana) that piece between the gearbox and the engine.

So, I only had to modify the original "bell" to fit the h55f; I put also a new silent blick.

The matter is the tranny input shaft: there are several kinds of it; I utilized a gearbox from HJ 61; that gearbox has the same datas of stock 3 gear of FJ 40.

In coslusion, if you put a gearbox from HJ 61 you shouldn't have any problem (exept that simple work on the bell).

If you want later I can post some pics of the work.

The campana is the housingbell, right, and the silent block is that piece of rubber that hold the gearbox (but also the engine, the transfer case etc.)

Here there are some pics of my work:

wow i cant belive that you cut you bell housing .... thats scary, why not just pick up one off a or 5 speed truck.

The gearbox is from an HJ 61.

It was much more simple modify the original bellhousing from 3 gear box(the work has been done by a professional workshop) then put on the one from the 5 gear box (it was too long and all the bolts didn't fit).

Did I answer you question? I'm afraid I didn't cought what you meant...

I installed a H55F into my 1969 FJ40. I used a early 2F bellbousing to a split case from a 1986 FJ60. Floor board mods are necessary, and you might need to remove/move the middle crossmember. I also needed a 1" body lift to fit.
