4runner bushwackers

Do the bushwacker flares make it so you have to cut out anything around the rear wheel wells? Does anybody here have them? If so, how do you like them?

in short yes you have to cut out the rear fenders a bit to fit the bushwackers on. My friend had em on his old runner, it looked nice but didnt do so well off road, kept hangin em up on trees and they themselves are kinda tough but the way they are mounted isnt so they have a tendancy to come off.
not the best in my book but if you gotta get some flairs on to get it road leagle its a good way to go.

I put some flares on my old 1987 4 runner and didn't have to cut anything. I thought that they were Bushwacker flares, but this was about 3-4 years ago. I had some rust starting to bubble around the rear wheelwells, so I treated the rust, and put the flares on.

They make 2 different versions. The "Extend-A-Fender" which requires no cutting, and the "Cut-Out", which does require cutting. The EAF gives you about 1.5-1.75" coverage, and I think the Cut-out style gives you about 3".

I run the extend-a-fender flares. They fit great and are not to difficult to install if you have a helper. The only cutting you have to do to install these will be optional (the little plastic plate in front on the rear fenders). These will NOT offer additional space in the wheel wells, for that you must use the other flares.

I'm thinking about putting the Bushwacker extend-a-fender flares on my 1985 4Runner. Does anyone have a photo of these on their Gen 1? I'm particularly interested in what you did or didn't do where the flare goes over the built-in plastic rock guard in front of the rear fenderwells.

Here are my extend a fenders. They still look great and I've been running them for 4 years now. They use self tapping screws to install. Just remove the wheels and have a helper hold them in place while you operate the drill.

Oh, and I heated up my rock guards with a hair dryer and cut them to shape. Not to difficult but they must be removed or trimmed

Thanks. That's a great looking 4Runner. I'm going with the OME lift and 31" BFG MT's, so mine won't be quite as tall. I'm guessing you have 3 or 4 inches under yours.

The photo helped. If you happen to be around your rig with a camera I would love to see a close up of where you trimmed the rock guard. I assume you just put the flare up in place and traced a line on the rock guard and then cut it?

Thanks Kevin. Doesn't look like there's much, if any, gap where the extend-a-fender overlaps the rock guard. Maybe I'll try them.

I like the front bumper. Just ordered mine along with my OME lift kit. I've ordered a Warn M8000 (couldn't pass it up for $600 delivered!) to put on it. Also ordered a new DOA Racing 150 hp engine, but that's a subject for another thread!
