Let's take a step back John. I documented for posterity [or is that posteriority!] one of John's finer moments at work.;p

John, you are welcome to use this as reference when you apply for membership in the Elwood chapter!

Yes, that WAS a REALLY CLOSE CALL!

Yesterday, we tried to start the new engine in the pig. Engine did not want to fire. We tested and discovered several points of weak spark. Apparantly, some of the original 30 year old wires didn't take so well to being jostled.

We decided we would have another go at it today, and swap in a Pertronix for good measure.;)

I did note that the few times it was close to firing I heard something that resembled a knock, but didn't know what exactly I was hearing. So I just fretted.

Today, we put in the Pertronix, ended up jumping most of the factory wiring, bumped up the idle and the timing, and she finally fired!

As soon as she fired, the knock was loud and clear.

Now I've heard a few knocks here and there over the years, but this one was different. Not deep enough to be a rod or main, not shallow enough to be the pan. Not forward enough to be the timing gears [ Yes, I've heard knocking timing gears before!]

Best bet: John, PULL THE PAN!

Well, John hemmed and hawwed a bit, but after telling him a couple of handy stories from other 'adventures', he agreed to do it.

We checked about three rod bearings out without incident before I realized that the pickup tube from the screen to the oil pump didn't look right.

The tube should be pointing pretty much vertical into the pickup screen. This one was diagonal side to side AND front to back.

I went inside the shop, grabbed a sheet of scratch paper and confirmed it: there was NO ROOM BETWEEN THE CRANK AND THE TUBE!

John pulled the tube, and sure enough, it was bent in both planes. There was a kink in the tube right next to the banjo for starters.

In the short time [< 2 minutes] that we ran the engine, the crank had also already CUT HALFWAY THRU THE TUBE! In two more minutes, the tube would have had a hole in the high side, above the oil level in the pan, and would have run the motor dry!

Disaster narrowly averted!

There's some good cruiser karma there!
