I am planning a 2UZ swap into a non-100 series cruiser. I would like to find an exhaust that gives me a little of the v8 rumble but does not become annoying at constant highway speed. Ideally some noise under acceleration but quiet when cruising...

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
mark

The Doug Thorley catback set for 100's would be too loud for your use. Maybe you can find out which muffler EMS specs for their catback set. Should be slightly quieter.

Nothing is better than quiet. You never know when you have to sneak into a campground after hours and folks that live near highways don't need any additional noise pollution.

I am looking for something that displays some "balls" under enthusiastic acceleration but remains civilized the rest of the time...

I threw a $20 Flowtech Raptor from Autozone on my Avalanche and it was exactly what you wanted. Hardly louder than stock when cruising and had a nice tone under WOT. Never had any issues with it. If you don't like it you're out maybe $50 including weld/reweld stock muffler, better than a $500+ catback. If you're looking for a more known brand, Magnaflow makes a long 22"(I believe) muffler that fits what you're looking for. Usually the shorter the louder so keep that in mind.

I thought about this also and ended up thinking when I do it I would use the flow master 70 series.

My EMS system came with a magnaflow muffler...It was a bit too loud, so I put a moroso spiral flow on the end of the tailpipe...it's a bit quieter now.

Yeah, I remember starting that thread while back going back and forth between keeping the Borla and getting the Doug Thorley. I've had the Doug Thorley for little over a month and it's about as loud as I'd go, I had the Borla catback before and it was too boring for my taste. It had a minor drone in the cabin and the exhaust note wasn't anything to write home about IMHO.

The Doug Thorley is definitely louder, some may find it annoying, I love the sound outside the truck and have gotten numerous compliments now from various people from the guys at the Lexus dealership to complete strangers at gas stations. Inside there is some minor resonance around 1,800 RPM and there's a buzzing coming from my hatch which I gotta fix but at 30, 55 MPH, or 65-70 MPH for that matter, there's no drone.

There's a video I shot with the GoPro last month after I got it. Good speakers or headphones are an absolute must as that's the only way you can hear the deep bass frequencies!

That Thorley system would make me not want you as a neighbor for sure.

There are apps that will play any engine sound you want right through your stereo, with revs changing with speed utilizing the GPS on your phone.

+1 on abuck99's post. I have a 24 inch magna flow and it's barely noticeable from stock, go with the 18" if you want more of a rumble. either way it's a stainless steel muffler that will last you a lifetime, price at (from what I recall) $75-$95 +install.

Thanks for the link. I'll add there that Magnaflow suggested the 12586 as the latest, most quiet option for our trucks. It has an 11" case with the same I/O & offsets. Looking forward to Monday when I get it installed.
