I’m new to the form and FJ80 world so I apologize if this is a repeat and answered.

Is it possible to swap out the 80 series 2nd row seats with a newer gen? 100 series or even a different Toyota model?

Thanks for any feedback

I tried searching briefly but no luck so far - IIRC somebody had posted about making/welding a bracket to the floor, and installed 100 series second row, in order to get the modern child seat clip attachment points, for car seats.

Hmm that’s an interesting approach. The child seat attachments is what I was hoping to get. I’ve looked at Toyota Highlander, Sequoia and Sienna seats but they all seem to have different mounts to the floor.

'00 was the first model year they had child seat anchors but I'd say it would be a headache getting them in an 80.

I have a childseat in my 94 and run the seat belt through the back and then the rear anchor strap attached in the rear cargo. its 100% solid. I'm sure a ton of dads in here run the same without issue.

Pretty sure they make aftermarket universal kits these days, no need to swap the seats out.

I had a thread not too long ago about rear child seats as well. Consensus seemed to be that if properly installed (usually getting on the thing while working the belt) that is a perfectly good option.

Suppose it depends on your usage if it's worth the trouble of adding the LATCH system. For me, it's not, since mine is just a wheeling/camping rig and I won't have to install the seats all that often. If you're trying to move them from vehicle to vehicle often, maybe it's worth the effort.

Edit for link. In my searching I didn't find much mention of seat swaps for the reason of adding the LATCH stuff but I also wasn't really considering that option so it may be out there.

There is someone here that swapped in the rear seats from an Audi. Actually looked quite sharp. Take a look in the Compiled Seat Swap Thread.

That would be me, and this is the thread I created about it. I have to say though, confident though I am about the strength of the installation, I would never install a car seat in either row of my LX. With adults it's fine, because the seat belts are the original design, i.e. were actually government tested, and I've actually had the fabric replaced on them just to be sure, but a car seat that's attached just to my installed seats, no way. I would never attach a car seat to anything other than completely factory components.

I have a car seat for my 2.5 year old normally in the back seat of my truck. It's totally secure using the seat belt and tethering back to the 3rd row bracket. I too would not trust car seat anchors on a swapped in seat. Also, if you read the fine print, there's a weight limit on most car seat anchors where they recommend switching to the belt.
