2FE into a 60

Sorry this has been such a long absence. I have a company to run, had a catastrophic bathroom failure, we moved the company from the shop in the backyard to a commercial warehouse in an industrial park and got even busier.

I also was able to move my cruiser (less engine) from my garage to the shop in the backyard. I now have tons of room, a kick ass stereo in the shop and a furnace that works when it's supposed to! Life is great!

The first thing on the list is to remove the dash and see what wiring I have in the cruiser and using the links previously, get my new 62 wiring harness all opened up and pull out what is needed! I them will get that all spliced / grafted into the 60, put the engine back in and start hooking stuff up and hopefully not release and smoke from the wires. Once that smoke is let out of the wires, they won't work as well...

I'll take lots of pics and and ask for lots of help!

I pulled my harness all apart and am now trying to make sense of what I need out of it, what parts and pieces I have and what I don't have! How's that for a cry for help! It appears there are several relays I need as well as some guidance on some of the relays, what they do and where they are normally situated.

Since I have not put my engine back in yet, I thought it would be a good idea to try and sort the wiring out before dropping that in. I also was wondering if it would be wise to pull the dash to try and run the new (very small) wiring harness, connect it to the panels, graph them to the wires where needed etc, rather than just try to fish it through and deal with bad connections? any thoughts?
 
Yes pull the dash. I used the complete 62 harness and only had to tie in the rear wiper defroster and wire the fuel pump to the harness. I did have to change the headlights around too.
 
Hello all, so I am in the middle of doing this same exact build just that I do not have weeks or months to do it, just a week to week and a half.
It is a lot of stress but this will be a really nice ride when it is done.
I have had the 60 sitting around for a year now and was doing all the research for the 2FE build but then winter came and things go slow (the cold does that). Well now it is time to finally get her done.
Willflow-- don't you think your comment over simplifies the project? I have a complete 62 harness and there is a lot more than just wiring the fuel pump and swaping the headlights to do...

Lubedude -- How is your cruiser project going? i was reading up on the post and then it ended, I figured I can chime in with my progress but it would be nice to have someone else doing it to.

Where I am so far...
I am getting my cam back from Washington tomorrow and then the motor, H55, and transfer case are going to get assembled along with all the intake hard parts. Sourcing all the needed gaskets will be hard but I'll get it done. After that is done the motor will be painted and while the paint dries I will be installing a new leaf spring set. But that and the rest of the stuff still left to do are fairly straight forward.

Besides finding all the needed gaskets, wiring up the harness to everything is going to be the most stressful part, in my opinion. but lets see what happens...

Well I guess I just wanted to type out a little about what I was doing but also home I hear some updates on this thread?
 
I believe pretty much all the gaskets you need to assemble the top end of a 2FE can be had from Toyota as the valve regrind kit. Since you are doing the cam as well that will add a couple more (side cover and timing cover) but I wouldn't think there would be any issue getting them from Mr. T. I got all the gaskets I needed through CruiserDan, with a few from 4 Wheel Auto as well since I was in Edmonton at the time.
 
Hmm well Toyota no longer carries the valve regrind kit so I am trying to fine pieces where I can. I already have the head gasket, timing cover gasket, rear main seal, oil plan gasket, and I think that is mostly what I have. Can someone tell me what else I will need? So far I am aware of the side cover gasket, thermostat gasket, and fuel pump gasket (for a block plate). I saw somewhere where there was a valve stem listed, do I need one of these, I had the heads fully rebuilt so is that something they would have replaced?
 
What about timing cover gasket, front main seal, water pump gasket?

all these gaskets I have, I am mostly worried about the throttle body, intake with Plenum, and all those parts the come together on the EFI. I'm about to just get a roll or gasket material and make my own. I found some places that can source these gaskets but it will be a week or two before I get them and I unfortunately don't have that much tome so I'll have to do what I can.
 
The TB and intake gaskets should be available from the dealer.

Gasket, throttle body: 22271-61020, $5.06 list
Gasket, intake/exhaust: 17172-61060, $40.27 list
Gasket, plenum: 17176-61020, $14.76 list

If your dealer can't get them you need to shop someplace else.
 
ok thanks, I'll look into those, but of course I again discovered something else I need.
On the intake where the injectors clamp on to there are these black plastic with rubber O-ring cups where the lower part of the injectors sit, does anyone know where I can get 6 replacement of those? If the dealer is the only one that has them does anyone have a part number? Or are these parts kind of a standard thing and can be used found for other vehicles?

~30,000 total vehicles imported, the newest of which are now over 21-years-old.

Not much of a demand in the big picture. Compare that to the gillions of Corollas.
 
You guys are killing me here... Truck is running fine other than some random low idle issues and a bit of smoke at startup, and yet I find myself gravitating towards threads like this and looking for a 3FE with a good topend... BASTARDS!!

Any new updates? After talking to some friends and reading this thread, it's got me really thinking about putting together a 2FE for my 86!

3) Is this a thoroughly tried and tested project that would make a reliable daily driver

I know other types of nonfactory combinations can make for a tuning nightmare but I havent read of anyone doing anything other than plugging in a factory ecu and two oxygen sensors

Challenges of the 2fe into a 62 seem to be:
1) 62 accessories (AC, Power steering pump etc.) need some custom brackets to work with the 2f block.
2) ?

Is it really all sunshine and rainbows?
 
This is the original link that I found when researching the conversion. It was in the TLCA magazine and goes through the process of doing the conversion in a 62 with diagrams for making brackets and whatnot. Other than this I'm still learning about it haha

1) Add me to the 2FE list, but mine is in a FJ40, and I have no experience with the engine in a 60-series. I was aware of about 8 engines before I built mine several years ago.
2) I have about 20,000 miles on the engine.
3) I daily drive mine for several weeks during the summer. With the low end torque it's a very street friendly engine.
