2000 LX sold for $16k on BaT - thoughts?

That steering wheel looks like it lived in a desert vehicle. Very odd for the midwest to look like that.

My guess is the folks on BaT (I visit often but have never placed a bid or sold a car there) know these vehicles and wouldn't buy this one, so I bet some newbie got excited seeing "this is JUST LIKE Tyler Hoover's Land Cruiser!!!" and had to have it. The biggest problem for sellers on BaT is the comments, when I look at vintage Benz auctions so many people ask if it's matching numbers (Mercedes didn't do this) or comment about things not being correct when they are if you know what you're looking at. They can really drive bids and interest down on a good car, and sometimes raise them on a trashy one. This could be collusion between bidders to allow one to get a better deal, or among sellers so their car gains a higher final price, so the lack of transparency is why I don't put money down on the site. I'm currently selling my W111 coupe and would love to list it there but don't trust the process enough.

Speaking of, I haven't seen the LX on Hoovie's channel in months but don't recall it being sold, anyone know what became of it?

Someone here suggested he did sell it: LX470 Build on Hoovie's Garage

I paid $23K for my 2002 LX470 four years ago.
It was absolutely mint, new tires, recent service of all fluids, zero rust anywhere, and only 24K miles.
Now it has 52K miles and still looks pretty much as it did four years ago.
Nothing then even new caught my attention, and still doesn't - other than a Tesla :)
Only issue I have had with it was I replaced the MAF Sensor and an O2 sensor.
I'm retired and don't plan on taking it off road so it will probably be the last, and best, vehicle I'll own.

Because OVERLANDING..... what we used to call camping....

Haha, so much truth here. The term previously used for month-long trek's across continents with little to no civilization is now used for weekend camp trips.

I still want "overland" gear on my weekend camp trips, but it's funny how that term has changed.

Back when I was in high school, my GF and I used to pack up my SC400 and go camping in the mountains for the weekend without telling our parents. We just called it "running away and camping". It wasn't until recently I realized I needed a fully built Tacoma to do it properly.

Wow, so not even a video to send her off, unusual for him. He seemed to really enjoy it but makes me wonder if he trashed it too much to feel good about posting it for sale publicly rather than hand off to a bud like Tavarish who buys his failed projects, burned up Ferraris, etc.?

I think he did mention it in a video, but it wasn't a big one. If I recall correctly, it was when he bought the H2.

His money isn't made in selling cars. It is made in ads and sponsorship. He is probably making at least 25-75k a month off of those two. If he had really wrecked it or messed it up, we would have probably seen it with a click bait title. My guess is that Hoovie doesn't make money producing content on cars that are reliable once they have been base lined... So the Yota had to go!

The export market on these is huge. It wouldn’t appear the Middle East loves these more than us.

I would be surprised if we were a big market for 100 series given the strong dollar and their availability elsewhere in the world. Now with our low new car prices, many German cars get brought to the USA and then shipped to Russia and China. The markup there is astounding.

I know first hand. There is a strong export business on 100’s and 200’s. The US spec trucks are a big deal and we are cheap.

Oh yes, I'm well aware. I like to look up my fav channels on SocialBlade and see their earnings. Hoovie is listed at up to $300,000 a year just on video earnings, not counting sponsorships. Doug Demuro, who I really cannot watch with his annoying little girl personality earns up to $1.4 million per year in youtube revenue alone.

Hoovie traded the LX470 for that yellow Hummer H2 if I remember correctly. He's not far from here. If you watch any "Car Wizard" videos a few of my cars have either been featured or appear in the background, including my '99 LX. Tyler has made an incredible business and brand out of "Hoovie's Garage." I understand that he does very well.

Regarding the BaT LX470, I watched that keenly as I have a '99, albeit one with 217K. Personally, I would take mileage over rust but I didn't buy the truck. The idea that an item has a certain value that can be determined by a website, or comparisons, or actuarial tables, or whatever (opinions usually) is complete BS. Everything in the world is worth exactly what the buyer and seller agree to transfer ownership for. BaT does a great job of matching up sellers and buyers. Hopefully everyone was happy with the transaction. I'm guessing the seller was, anyway.

Interestingly, there were a comment or two about how someone thought it should have bid up to some absurd number (40K maybe?). I would like to find THAT GUY. Do I have a deal for him!

You called it :

I'm still trying to figure out if BaT is a scam or just chock full of dopey people. The listing reminded of one of my tenets which is that you should never buy a car from a seller who describes the wheels as being "wrapped" in tires, refers to the leather upholstery as "hides", or the paint job as a "respray". Just stay away from them.

I saw that, and the guy who said this one should have gone for $25-30k. I think those are non-enthusiasts who have been reading comments on youtube videos and among their buddies talking about the crazy prices these bring. I hope to find them if I ever sell mine.

BaT operates at the intersection of on-line auto auction and social media, both of which are full of potential for foul play. How could you ever know whether the commenter was acting in good faith or a friend of the seller, or actually the seller? I think some of the high prices are prima facie evidence that a trusting naive buyer has been duped. BaT itself is probably legit but I would not be surprised if there was a BaT expose someday. Too many of the prices smell fishy.
