2000 LX sold for $16k on BaT - thoughts?

BaT operates at the intersection of on-line auto auction and social media, both of which are full of potential for foul play. How could you ever know whether the commenter was acting in good faith or a friend of the seller, or actually the seller? I think some of the high prices are prima facie evidence that a trusting naive buyer has been duped. BaT itself is probably legit but I would not be surprised if there was a BaT expose someday. Too many of the prices smell fishy.

There is also a premium for selling on BAT, one might say it attracts connoisseurs of the auto world and one's that are willing to pay extra for a great example.

even though we'd be able to find a similar lx likely in better condition for cheaper with that low mileage in cali you'd be looking at 10-13k, it can also take up to a year as you'd have to be patient waiting for a prime example and hope someone doesn't snatch it from you... someone with spare cash may not want to do that and just accept the premium.

Don’t they operate like a auction? Pay going in and pay going out? Buyers and sellers premiums?

Exactly, not all buyers are beaters looking to grind someone down to dust. Some people are willing to pay for what they want. I find that type of buyer are usually the happiest buyers.

I predict we'll see the new buyer here in 30 days. He'll share his instagram handle, explain how he wants to build an 'overland type vehicle', then ask what size tires fit without lifting, and whether or not he should keep his AHC.

Then in another 30 days he's going to be pissed because he blew $16k on a rusty truck and the ABS pump motor went out and 4-speed transmission is making noise.

Anyone wanna put some money on it?

Imma need you to call me before you sell yours.
Don't forget the "I've always liked these but not sure how reliable they are. How many miles do you all have on yours? Will I make it to 150k?"
