An initial search didn't turn anything up, but thought some folks might be interested to see that Werewolf Tech out of the Ukraine has a Portal Axle solution option for the 200 series...looks like it nets about 5" of ground clearance and of course the OBA capability is nice too. Not sure on shipping etc, but have seen minimal posts on people going this route in the US.

Leaving this here. Beasts.

Other than Russians, zombies, and Grave Digger, who are portal axles for? Am I correct in assuming the gearing makes road driving pretty much impossible or what? Or am I confusing this with planetary gears?

Still, very impressive builds in those videos.

Depending on how much lower gearing you get might make it where you don't have much top end speed. Being that it's a 35% gearing reduction slap some 40s or 42s and you've got the right size tire to match the gearing! :steer:

5” lift. And you thought the center of gravity of your Land Cruiser was high today…

Portals have obvious benefits for clearance and gearing but substantial compromises normal use. Parasitic drag and heat in the hubs aren't great for efficiency and limit top speed. Suspension control and driveline slack isn't as tight.

Does the Mercedes G550 4X4 squared have these limitations?

Probably. As a factory effort, the geometries probably have much tighter control

haha youtube sent me down this rabbit hole

Looks like it is a very similar system to the Toyota MegaCruiser....another rabbit hole

I think in terms of wheel rotation, nothing changes as it is a 1:1 from the axle to the wheel itself.
Just moving the axle above the centerline of the wheel.
But I am purely guessing.

super cool.
Can't wait to see one of the cazier Mudders do it to a LC

On the plus side, those retain the disc brakes at the hub. On the HMMWV the brakes are on the axle inboard of the portal gearset, so any drivetrain slop is experienced while braking.

And... it has a CTIS option. Now that would be pretty handy on the trail!

I wonder if anything has come of this.
74weld said they were making some for the 200. ~20k

I saw they just made some for the 5th gen 4runner.

I saw that as well. Very cool!!! But ~$20k is ouchhhhh. With that said... I wonder how much component you need aside from that $20k kit. I also wonder what the Stellar route costs to get to 37s. If it's comparable might be nice to have the clearance of portals. Not removing KDSS. Not rolling fenders. Cutting frame and hacking the body.

I enjoy the ground clearance portal hubs provide on my HMMWV, but don't think I would consider them on my LX.
Just doesn't seem practical for the strengths of this platform, and the increased rpms at the same speeds would be rough. My 6.3 and 3-speed only allow 55mph without creating problems on the AM General platform. It's rough.

Well, the popular 4.88 regear for 200's is a 25% reduction. The 74Weld offers 22% reduction for their other offerings. I'm guessing it'll be the same for the 200.

The hmmwv has a gear reduction of 1.92, i highly doubt 74 weld gets close to that number. WEREWOLF the company above is 1.35. I can see 74weld being in that same range.

For $20k buy a high mileage 200 and send it….

Then you have 2 200s, a nice one and a beater.

Extremely High mileage 100s are going for over $20k 😬. If u go that route might as well just go solid axle high mileage cruiser n be done with it

At least one Werewolf set has been on order for a while now for a guy in the U.S. I don’t think he is on here very often but you can follow him on Instagram - James @cap10berry
