I've used the search tools in a couple different toyota forums but can't seem to find much info at all about a 1990 HDJ81 Toyota Landcruiser.
I've got a 1990 HDJ81 4.2L Turbo Diesel truck from Japan. and I need to know a couple things.
Which fluids go in the differentials? Front/rear/transfer? ex. 80w90, 75w140?
I also need the toyota's Oil, Air, and Fuel Filter part numbers for this truck...
Any specs like Tourque, HP, Weight, Fuel tank capasity....?
Any help?

Lots of questions. Im sure someone who OWNS one of these babies will chime in. As for the diffs, I use 75/90 Amsoil synthetic ONLY! Whatever brand you choose only run synthetic. IMO gearing more than any other factor benefits from the properties of synthetic oil. IE Diffs/Trans/Tcase etc etc etc. I use synthetic in everything I own. Engine oil too.

The only argument against it for diffs Ive heard is that if you're wheeling A LOT and you change out your fluids because of water it gets spendy. For most people that isnt an issue.

Good luck.

From the EPC…

Oil Filter – 90915-03006 or substitute 90915-30002 – it looks like this part is also used by the 1PZ and 1HZ Cruisers and 2LT Hilux
15600-41010 has also been reported as fitting 1HDT, but my search showed it fitting some F, 2F, 3F, 3FE, 1FZFE, 2LT, B, 2B, 3B, 13BT Cruisers instead

Fuel Filter – 23303-64010 – it looks like this part is also used by some 3B, 1PZ, 2LTE, 1HZ, 1KZTE Cruisers and 2L#, 3L Hilux

Air Filter – 17801-68030 – it looks like this part is also used by some KZTE, 12HT Cruisers

I haven’t had a chance to try any of these yet; hopefully someone more experienced will post up.

Some sites with HDJ81 specs:
Luxury Imports
Rising Sun Imports
KK Trading

Post your question on 4x4ph.com in the tech section, or do a search there.

I don't follow the specs all that much. I just use the cheapest dino oil I can find and change every six months or so as I don't develop a lot of mileage in that time. My diff oil is anything with GL5 and changed every year. My transfer case and atf aren't due for another 6 months and offhand I don't remember what I used, just some dino oil from one of the gas companies.

I use only Amsoil in my drive line. There is a noticable reduction in friction.....more braking required on familair down slopes.Amsoil claims 4.2% increase in fuel economy with syn. in diffs.Another advantage if you are operating in extereme cold.....-40 etc.....you wil not be able to to operate with dino.Cheers Stephen

So ths is what I've gotten so far outta this post.
75-90 Amsoil front/rear diffs?
Transfer case? Syn ATF Dexron-III?
I work at a lube shop, so we've got plenty of amsoil 75w90 for cheap:D
I live in Saskatchewan, and im looking at some -60 days this winter, im planning on using 5w40 PetroCan Duron Synthetic... (in the crank) this should be alright?
As for the auto tranny.... I'm asuming it requires Dexron-II? The Hiluxs we've had all said dexron-II... so im thinking I can use Dexron-III with a friction modifier?
Thanks guys...
Also.... do the lower ball joints have grease fittings? If yes, should they not be greased past -12 degrees?

Do NOT use ATF in your transfer case! Make sure you use gear oil!

All 80 series mechanicals are the same wether it's JDM (HDJ80), USDM (FZJ80), or CDM (LX450). That last one is not really a model, I thought I'd plug the fact that 80's were sold in Canada.

You can follow the same maintenance (except for the engine) as the US guys do in the 80's section. I would consider baselining your "new" truck because you won't have any idea of the history. This includes all fluid changes, axle rebuilds, and a few othe minor things.

As far as oil goes, sythentic will always give you better cold weather protection. The standard stuff is:

All from 1997 FSM:
- Diff fluid Below -18 C SAE 80W-90 or 80W (FR 2.65 L lockers 2.80 w/o lockers, RR 3.25 L)
- Transfer case SAE 75W-90 (1.7 L)
- Auto tranny Dexron II or III 2.0 L when using drain plug. (Note: draining the ATF from the plug only will only get remove about 2 L. Removing the tranny pan and / or flushing the system will require more ~1.5 L. Search the 80's forum for tansmission fluid change).

HTH,
Alex

the 41010 is the large, small spud (spin on) filter used on 3B's, 2F's etc. In the US, it subs to the YZZ small filter. The small filter is made stateside (no matter what might be printed on box etc) and for 'good' oil, frequent changes, light duty gas engines, etc it might be ok. Offshore, bad oil, diesel, or to use what was spec'd, buy the 41010 filter. CDan etc may chime in, but dealers get discounts on YZZ filters when buying bulk, therefore they 'recommend' them. You own a BJ74 or BJ70, buy the 41010.

now, as was posted WRONG in several sections, the HZ and HD-T's take the 30002 filter, which has a large spud (spin on). YZZ's do not fit, tell parts guys to stuff it. If you have any HZ power cruiser or HDJ81 etc, buy the 30002.

and I picked up 5 gallons of Pennsoil synthetic 75-90 for $102 tax included here in Tucson 2 weeks ago. Mobil 1, etc was $8.50 + w/o tax per quart. 4 qts to gallon, 5 gallons per pail, do math.

I am not a believer in Amsoil and this discussion should not go that route. Any Diesel lives longer if you change oil 3,000 miles or less, period. Use rated oil w/ goodies. Collect it, recycle it, and keep up the filters. A purge every few years (clean crankcase) also seems wise after you have pulled a few pans and seen the sludge that develops.

My 88 HJ61 has ATF in the tcase behind the auto

All auto 4x4s I have ever owned have ATF in the t-case.

Reason...just a guess... If the seal between the two goes and your auto fills up with gear oil it's a new tranny, if it has ATF in it, not a big problem.

I don't understand the aurgument to not use ATF in your t-case.

Thanks for the info. (not my thread, but it could have been) :)

What are your thoughts about dual filter systems like Amsoil's (regular bypass filter plus additional low flow filter)?

I have never been given a good reason not to either...other then the Toy manaul says gearlube. I've seen a few autos now in which the t-case was lubed with ATF...Either a shop changed it out not knowing, or the owners wanted piece of mind with the seal issue.

Surprised you guys never heard this before, ATF is thinner and has been rumoured to get into the gears and bearings much quicker than thick gear oil thus like start up on a engine making the gear box last longer.

Myth or truth.......

Fj62, FJ80, FZJ80???

I've serviced MANY of these trucks, have never seen ANY gear oil contamination in the ATF drained from the tranny.

I do understand the argument as to why ATF in the tcase can be good.

But if Toyota recommends Gear Lube, and no one has had a problem doing this, then I see no reason to take a chance.

I'm not a lover of syntetic fluids .. I prefer god mineral oil and more frequent changes .. Anycase in my diff, tranny and t-case always use Castrol 80-W90 for LSD.

I like to keep personal e-mails "personal"...

Thanks Wayne,

I thought that a 45 year old? could show more maturity than a 18 year old in this situation, but i guess not.
