Maximum Toyota size is 3.3mm. Where did you find larger ones? Thank you.

Having a fleet of cars with kids and projects seems you are always having to figure out how to prioritize them. The hundy has needed a lot of maintenance and steering work this year and is getting pretty close to being mechanically caught up. The 87 4Runner has been a slew of electrical problems, starting, and stalling issues. Yesterday, pulled the intake cam and shims to finish measurements and get these ordered. I haven't been able to find a US shop that makes custom shims since I need a few outside of the Toyota offerings. Looks like I'll have to order some down under.
I think @scottryana could help you find some that will fit.

Placed an order with Precision Shims out of Australia today. So far, excellent customer service. Unlike Toyota that does increments of .05mm they have increments of .01mm. They even phoned today to help me complete my order. They have shims up to 4.50mm thick. Home - https://www.precisionshims.com.au/

The block heater started seeping some time ago. I’m debating whether to pull it and try to see if I can get a freeze plug back in there or maybe a new O-ring. There’s no easy access to try to press a freeze plug-in. Any tips out there?

Block heater out. O-ring flattened and didn’t hold up.

Good thread about O-rings. Just ordered a nitrile replacement. We'll see....

Shims arrived from Australia this afternoon. 😀

Nothing like a good ole’ FSM in paperback to work through a job 😀

Shims and buckets installed. Lord willing, I got the valve clearance in spec. Will be using break in oil and cam lube on the lobes.

The precision shims mic’d perfectly. Intake cam installed and torqued to 12ft/lbs per FSM.

My little girl asked to hang out tonight so no refusing that! Will come back to this later.

Replaced block heater o-ring and reinstalled. Used a big adjustable wrench to hold it while tightening. I don’t think these things ever get super tight to the block with as much weight is hanging out.

Checked valve adjustment and everything is in spec except for intake 6b. Scratching my head over this one as I worked painstakingly to get them all in spec. Will order another shim to get it in spec. Gotta figure out the best way to deal with it. Quickest way is to pull the cam again but I have been eyeing some tools too. Since it's within the Toyota range, hopefully I can grab it at the dealer.

Cam gear cleaned and installed torqued to 54 ft/lbs.

Installed OEM front crank seal. Packed the seal spring with grease.

Changed intake number 6 last shim by loosening intake cam in FSM sequence, a screwdriver and magnet.

New valve cover gasket set. Will probably check cams again within the next 30k.

Installed the valve cover, spark plug wires, retainers, water pipes and thermostat with new o-rings. Torqued to spec.

At the crossroads now of installing the TRD Supercharger.

Note to self:

Has anyone identified JIS Toyota hardware part numbers to replace the generic hardware that was originally supplied with the s/c to make it look more factory?
Wondering about silicone hoses to replace the elbows.
If anyone has a recommendation for any deviations from the original instructions, please chime in.
